Today we’d like to introduce you to Joyce Ai.
Hi Joyce, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started off as a regular physical therapist: burnt out, boxed in by insurance, and stuck in a clinic that didn’t align with how I wanted to help people. I knew I was capable of more and I craved the freedom to be able to treat on my own terms and connect with people who actually inspired me.
Outside the clinic, music has always been my escape. Raving and going to festivals gave me life ad helped me relieve stress. Through all the festivals I’ve gone to, I started noticing a trend: so many dancers, ravers, and DJs were struggling with pain, fatigue, and injuries, and no one was really teaching them how to take care of their bodies.
That’s when I took the leap and built my own business.
I combined my two passions, physical therapy and rave culture, and created “ThePhysioRaver”, where I share tips, guides, and knowledge around injury prevention and health and wellness tailored to the raving community. I also deliver personalized physical therapy services to those who are in need.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was definitely not a smooth road. I started this in the beginning of 2023, which was around halfway through my orthopedic residency, a rigorous program in and of itself that required extensive time and academic investment.
Working 60-70 hr weeks was the norm as I worked hard to create the skeleton of my business and the social media content to promote it. However I wouldn’t even consider that the hardest part.
The hardest part was the uncertainty of whether or not this idea would take off, or I would fail and become the laughing stock.
I officially launched this idea in January 2023. I didn’t get my first client until March 2023. In those 3 months, everyday was filled with self doubt, uncertainty, and anxiety. I’ve had days where I thought about giving it all up, coming up with a new idea, or accepting the fact that working a normal clinic job was going to be the rest of my life. However, every time I persevered through and told myself to believe in myself and not stop, which eventually led to me signing on my first client.
Signing my first client gave me hope, but that was only the beginning. I thought that once I signed on my first client that the self doubt would ease up, but it didn’t for a long time. The problems then became how to scale, how to continue to grow the business and make this a sustainable source of income that would allow me to quit my regular clinic job. I don’t think I fully believed that this was something that was truly sustainable until a year and a half after launching my business.
I’ve always excelled academically, but being an entrepreneur is a different ballgame. Unlike studying for a test, being prepared doesn’t always mean you will do well in business, and this was a hard lesson that I had to learn, and a different set of skillset I had to acquire that was different from what I was used to.
I had to learn to accept my shortcomings, the rejections, the setbacks that come with building a business, and learn to work through them. I had to learn to accept the instability that came from building a business, and be okay with the ebbs and flows. I had to learn to choose progress over perfection, and learn to consistently execute even on days where I really don’t feel like it and work through the self doubt.
My parents were another source of stress, as for the longest time, they were not supportive of my endeavors and wanted me to choose stability over innovation. Any time my mom would call me, she would only ask about my business, and never anything about any other aspect of my life, which not only added on more stress to myself, but also put a strain in our dynamic.
As you know, we’re big fans of ThePhysioRaver. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The PhysioRaver helps ravers, shufflers, and DJs stay strong, pain-free, and injury-free so they can keep doing what they love without burning out their bodies.
I’m a physical therapist who got tired of the traditional clinic model and wanted to treat people on my own terms. As a raver myself, I noticed a gap: no one was teaching our community how to actually take care of their bodies.
So I combined my passion for movement and music to create a space that’s by ravers, for ravers, offering personalized coaching, rehab, and recovery tools that actually fit the festival lifestyle.
What sets me apart is that I live this lifestyle. I’m not just a PT who occasionally goes to shows. I am a raver, dancer, and creator within this scene. I understand the culture, the demands, and the mindset, which allows me to connect with my clients on a deeper level and create programs that truly work for their unique needs. I treat all my clients virtually, so my services are not limited by location!
I’m proud that my brand makes people feel seen. Most ravers don’t feel heard in traditional healthcare spaces, and many dancers feel like they just have to “deal with” pain. The PhysioRaver changes that by empowering them to take control of their bodies with education, personalized plans, and a supportive vibe that reflects our community.
Whether it’s through one-on-one coaching, educational content, or recovery tips you can actually use after a festival, I’m here to make sure you don’t have to choose between raving and taking care of yourself, that you can have both!
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is riding on the back seat of my grandpa’s bicycle when he used to pick me up from school. We would always make a pitstop by the neighborhood playground, where I would then meet up with all my buddies and play games until it was time for dinner. I would always make my grandpa take me to the convenience store before going back home so I could grab some snacks. My parents were always strict on what snacks I could eat, but my grandpa being my kind grandpa would always sneakily buy me whatever snacks I wanted. It was our little secret 🙂
