Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Munoz.
Jose , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Thank you so much for the invitation to be interviewed.
Like many in this industry, I truly started in the trenches. My father immigrated to the U.S. in the 1970s and worked primarily in the fields before realizing he wanted to build something more stable for our family. He eventually started a small gardening route that provided year-round work. My two older brothers and I would tag along on weekends and during summer breaks, learning the business from the ground up.
What began as helping out eventually became a passion. I saw opportunities to expand beyond basic maintenance, so I pursued formal training in landscape design, arboriculture, irrigation, drainage, outdoor lighting, and other facets of landscape construction. That education led me to become a licensed Landscape Contractor and Certified Arborist, specializing in landscape design and maintenance as well as arboricultural practices.
Most recently, I’ve been applying those skills in the recovery efforts following the 2025 Palisades and Altadena fires, assisting clients with fire mitigation and fuel-modification plans.
I truly believe what brought me here was my father’s early influence in building a strong work ethic and his unwavering support. Watching him start a business in a new country inspired me to grow my own, and to approach this work with both pride and purpose.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I’m a first-generation Mexican American who grew up in South Los Angeles, and that experience shaped everything about how I approach work and life. I learned early that nothing is handed to you — you build it, one long day at a time.
I was also a high school dropout. At the time, I needed to work and help support my family, but walking away from school came with real consequences. Finding my way back into education later — enrolling in college, pursuing certifications, and committing to lifelong learning — was one of the hardest and most rewarding things I’ve ever done.
Growing up in a family business meant figuring things out as we went, often without the resources or safety nets that larger companies take for granted. One of the toughest transitions was going from being “the kid helping out” to becoming a licensed professional and business owner while still keeping the lights on. Along the way, I had to learn how to manage people, finances, and client relationships — skills no one really teaches you in the field.
More recently, climate change has introduced an entirely new set of challenges. Drought, heat, and wildfire recovery have forced us to rethink how landscapes are designed and protected. Working with families affected by the Palisades and Altadena fires was emotionally heavy, but it reinforced why this work matters.
Every obstacle has pushed me to evolve — not just as a contractor and arborist, but as a leader, a problem-solver, and someone committed to building safer, more resilient landscapes for the communities I come from.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Foregrounds Landscape grew out of a family gardening route that started with my father decades ago and evolved into a full-service landscape design and construction company based in Los Angeles.
Today, we specialize in thoughtful landscape design, construction, arborist services, irrigation and drainage, outdoor lighting, and wildfire-defense landscaping. As a licensed contractor and certified arborist, I stay personally involved in every project to ensure our work isn’t just beautiful, but safe, functional, and built to last.
What sets Foregrounds apart is that we combine hands-on craftsmanship with technical expertise and a deep connection to the communities we serve. From complete outdoor transformations to long-term maintenance and fire-mitigation planning, our goal is to create resilient outdoor spaces Angelenos can truly live in and be proud of.
What are your plans for the future?
My focus moving forward is on growing Foregrounds Landscape in a way that’s intentional, sustainable, and deeply connected to the needs of Los Angeles.
With wildfire risk, drought, and climate extremes becoming the new normal, I plan to continue expanding our fire-mitigation and fuel-modification services, helping homeowners and communities build landscapes that are both beautiful and defensible. Alongside that, I’m growing our arboricultural services — especially tree risk assessment and tree preservation — so clients can better understand the health, safety, and long-term value of the trees on their properties before problems arise.
I also want to invest more in education for my team and for clients, so people understand how thoughtful design, proper plant selection, proactive tree care, and preservation strategies can dramatically improve safety and longevity. Foregrounds started as a family effort, and I’m focused on scaling it thoughtfully while staying true to the craftsmanship and care that built it.
