Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlie Quezada and Ida Prosky. They share their story with us below:
Supernatural was founded in 2017 by Carlie. The concept literally came to her in a dream. After a few months as a pop-up in Detroit, the store found a home in its current location in Birmingham, MI. Ida was a happy customer of Carlie’s but living on the other side of the country and realizing that there wasn’t anything close to the careful curation and exquisite quality of Supernatural in Los Angeles, the two decided to partner to expand the brand’s presence, grow the e-commerce business, and open strategically placed flagship locations, starting with LA. Both believe deeply in an experience-based omnichannel model. While looking for the perfect location in LA, Supernatural has popped up on Abbot Kinney for the 2021 holiday season and partnered with Petit Ermitage to host a Valentine’s Day party and trunk show. Supernatural is now opening its permanent home on Third Street in Los Angeles.
I am excited to share with you that sustainable lingerie retailer Supernatural has just opened their first-ever Los Angeles store, located at 8366 1/2 W 3rd Street. The shop is open 11-6 Tuesday-Saturday and is the exclusive stockist in LA for the following brands: DSTM, Copenhagen Cartel, La Fille d’O, Adrina Dietra, and Paloma Casile.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Mostly it has been smooth, but of course, there are always challenges in small business! One particularly unique challenge that we continue to face is with marketing, especially on social media, because of restrictive rules around how much and which parts of the body are allowed to be shown.
Lingerie is typically perceived as a costume for sex, and by extension, lingerie stores are sometimes considered sleazy places. Our approach, however, has always been that lingerie is a tool of self-expression, embodiment, and empowerment. This perception also presented a challenge for us as we looked for our brick-and-mortar locations.
As you know, we’re big fans of Supernatural. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Supernatural is inspired by the transformational power of lingerie. We work exclusively with independent designers who share our values and create beautiful, high-quality items for everyday luxury.
We invite our visitors to rediscover their magical nature and celebrate the expression of their physical form, nipples, bumps, stretch marks, and all! We believe that everything is energy and that the good vibrations radiate through the materials, the supply chain, and to the empowering feeling of the wearer.
The name Supernatural is inspired by the magical power and beauty that all women possess. It’s our hope that when people walk out of our store, they feel supernatural.
All items that we carry are made ethically and sustainably. These words are often used but not consistently defined. To us, ethical and sustainable means that workers are paid fairly, work in not only humane but comfortable conditions, all designs are original, and attention is paid to reducing waste and protecting the environment through made-to-order production, the use of recycled or deadstock materials, and low or zero waste techniques. No sweatshops, no knockoffs.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Carlie: Fishing in northern Michigan with my dad
Ida: Walking through the Tivoli Gardens with my great grandmother
