Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Huang
Hi Brandon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hey VoyageLA – I’m Brandon, one of four co-founders, here on behalf of WorkWell. Thanks for reaching out, we’re stoked to share a bit of our story with your readers! 🙂
In 2017 we were four cousins, all in our twenties, coming from backgrounds in manufacturing to real estate development, who always knew we wanted to create something meaningful together. At the time coworking was on the rise and we saw potential in an old office space that was becoming vacant. It already had the bones of a collaborative workspace but needed a serious facelift.
We started meeting at the public library, drafting a business plan, and establishing our core values. We were aware of the risks of working with family, so we created values to serve as our foundation, knowing that disagreements would arise. Our aim was to make this venture something that enriched our relationship and personal development rather than divide us.
After months of planning and due diligence, we decided to take the plunge. And on February 1st, 2018, the night our lease began, we all showed up after work to start remodeling. Every evening for the next six months, we, along with friends and family, worked on transforming the space into something modern, inviting, and relaxing to work in – a home away from home. The collective effort and support from our community made the process extra special.
When we finally opened our doors, it was apparent that, beyond all that the space itself had to offer, people really loved the feeling that we all were just one big family! As a family-owned business, that’s exactly what we were going for. We were an integrated part of the community and genuinely cared about our members’ well-being and success. We believe that’s been the core of our success – creating a space not only to work in, but also feel like you belong.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like most new businesses, our journey was anything but smooth, and we faced a number of challenges that tested our resolve. In our first two years, we steadily built a vibrant community, and just as we reached full capacity, COVID hit. Most of the businesses at WorkWell were greatly affected – and we worked with all of our members as much as we could to try to keep the community intact. We learned a lot about compassion.
Although we lost half our members within weeks, we still realized we were lucky to be breaking even, knowing that just simply wasn’t the case for many.
Beyond that, we found a way to nurture the business in a natural way rather than constantly expanding just because you think that’s what you are “supposed” to do. We learned the importance of listening – not just to our members, but to the business itself, and to adapt to an ever changing landscape.
Businesses are living, breathing beings, and just like anything else, they communicate their needs to thrive. When things weren’t going as desired, it usually pointed to a shortcoming of how we had set the business up. This perspective helped us navigate challenges, always looking for the silver lining or the lesson within each experience.
As you know, we’re big fans of WorkWell. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
WorkWell is more than just a coworking space—it’s a community designed to nurture both productivity and well-being for modern professionals and creatives. We are diverse and constantly evolving, with members ranging from event production to skincare brands to everything in between.
We intentionally designed WorkWell to be a space that supports a calm, focused mind. The tall ceilings, natural elements like water features, and industrial modern design all come together to create an elevated workspace that promotes productivity but is also grounded and serene.
As a family-owned business, that sense of care extends to our members. We see our community as an extension of our family. On any day you can catch any one of us in the space working on projects, attending member events, honestly, just being a member like everyone else.
What sets us apart physically is the balance we’ve struck between offering a beautiful professional workspace and cultivating a mindful atmosphere. And beyond that, as stated before, is just treating every person that walks through our door as family.
At WorkWell, it’s not just about where you work – it’s about how you feel while you’re working. We’re proud to offer a space that supports both professional success and personal well-being, where people come not just to work, but to connect and thrive.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to WorkWell is creating an environment where our members feel supported, happy, and where their work experience feels like a natural, integrated part of life. Over time, we’ve seen how a strong community not only enhances member happiness but also positively impacts their businesses. When people feel connected, supported, and at ease, their work thrives.
For us, as cousins working on this venture together, it’s also important that the business enhances our personal lives and strengthens our bond. We believe that if our collaboration brings us closer, that same sense of connection and harmony trickles into the greater community.
Ultimately, our goal is simple: we want our members to be happy and successful. If we can continually optimize how we support them in achieving that, then we know we’re doing our job!
