Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Dewey.
Hi Ashley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Once I realized that every animal I interact with ended up stealing a piece of my heart, I decided that a career advocating for animal health was the right profession for me. Instead of following in my family’s footsteps entering the movie industry, I embarked on a journey to become a veterinarian.
I was very lucky to have found my passion at such a young age, because it allowed me to get a head start on my education. While in high school I also attended night classes at College of the Canyons, so by the age of 17, I had graduated from high school and obtained my associate degree in Biology, making me one of their youngest college graduates. I then attended California Polytechnic University, Pomona where I received by Bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences. To satisfy my desire to understand the prevention and control of diseases between animal and human populations, I obtained a Master’s degree in public health at the University of Southern Mississippi where i worked along epidemiologist during the H1N1 outbreak.
I continued my training at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA where i received my doctorate degree. During my 4-year journey through veterinary school, I was the NAVC (North America Veterinary Community) representative, as well as the president of the Student Chapter of Christian Veterinary Missions. I was elected to serve as a USA delegate at the International Symposium on Wildlife Utilization in South Africa, where I worked with various wildlife species, including elephants, giraffes, zebras, rhinos and large cats. I then completed an extensive 1-year internship in small animal internal medicine and surgery at Southern California Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Irvine, CA.
I served for 6 years on the IACUC committee at Biola University, lead a large team of doctors at a progressive small animal practice in Orange County, CA and worked at multiple specialty hospitals where i further advanced my endoscopy and surgical skills.
I love working in a field that is continually evolving and I believe it’s important to stay up to date on current diagnostic and treatment modalities. I completed additional training and achieved certificates in regenerative stem cell therapy, veterinary acupuncture, advanced soft tissue surgery, endoscopy and advanced ultrasonography. I have also received recognition as a Certified Fear Free Professional and a Cat Friendly Professional.
Through creating Treehouse Animal Hospital, my hope is to not just provide top-notch veterinary care; but to build a community where pets and their families feel seen, heard, and cared for. Come join me in this journey of compassion and well-being!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest obstacle is finding and retaining quality staff who genuinely care about animals and people. Furthermore, a surprising challenge as a female veterinarian was overcoming gender bias in a traditionally male dominated field.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
