We’re looking forward to introducing you to Grace Ojewole . Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Grace , we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I feel as though God is calling me to do music. I’m reminded everyday that I’m on the right path anytime I have doubts about my future. Making music is therapeutic for me. I genuinely love creating art, because music is a form of art. I used to be afraid of pursuing my music full time because I wasn’t sure if I was doing the right thing. But God always makes a way where there seems to be no way. Especially during my musical Journey, my faith has helped me to become the person that I am today as an artist.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Titilayo and I’m an Afrobeat/ Hip-Hop Artist born and raised in Northern California. I grew up in the Bay Area and eventually moved to Washington, D.C. to attend Howard University. I feel as though that was the beginning of my musical journey because that was when I was inspired to write my first poem. I spent a lot of time by myself because I moved across the country alone and didn’t know a lot of people out there. I enjoyed exploring the city especially the go go scene which I feel as though inspired my musical journey.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
I feel as though both of parents inspire me to be hardworking each and everyday. My parents came from another country and started a church while working full time jobs to provide for myself and my brothers. Watching my parents hustle to make sure that myself and my brothers have a better life inspires me everyday to strive for excellence. I learned from a young age that I have to work hard for anything that I want. And that I can never be lazy.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, there’s been many times I’ve had doubts about my music and wasn’t sure if I was doing the right thing. But anytime I’ve had those feelings, God will always remind me that I’m on the right path and that this is just apart of my journey. Success doesn’t happen overnight, and you have to have faith and always believe in yourself. Music always seems to find me in some shape or form. And I genuinely love making music, I couldn’t see myself doing anything else and being happy. Music is my passion and I genuinely love writing and recording music.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is the real me, I love spreading love and positivity everywhere I go and I love promoting love and positivity on my page. I grew up in a house full of Christian parents that always showed love and Gratitude to everyone even strangers. I love always showing love to people because that’s genuinely who I am as a person.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m at the studio, I genuinely love recording. And I enjoy writing my own music. I love when I’m at the studio and I’m recording a song and I remember the pain that I felt or the excitement that I felt when I wrote those lyrics. I always take myself back to that place while I’m recording. When I’m in the studio I feel like I can be myself and not feel judged because I’m creating ART. And there’s no rules to being creative.
