Exploring Life & Business with Todd Johnson of Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce

Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Johnson.

Hi Todd, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey started far from Beverly Hills, in a small town in Pennsylvania, and brought me to Los Angeles more than three decades ago with a simple mindset: work hard, stay curious, and build something meaningful. I spent nearly 30 years in the restaurant industry, including 17 years with Lawry’s, where I had the privilege of leading high-performing teams, managing complex operations, and learning firsthand what it takes for businesses to succeed or struggle in competitive environments. Along the way, I became deeply involved with the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce as a member, then as a Board member, serving as Board President and CFO before stepping into the CEO role almost ten years ago. That experience on both sides of the table shaped my leadership philosophy and gives me a unique perspective on how the Chamber can truly deliver value. Today, my focus is on building an organization that empowers more than 650 member businesses through meaningful connections, smart advocacy, and practical resources, while honoring a legacy that has shaped Beverly Hills since 1923. At its core, my story is about service, growth, and impact, using everything I’ve learned to help businesses thrive and to ensure the Chamber remains a forward-thinking, trusted partner for the next generation of leaders.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My transition from hospitality operations into leading the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce felt like stepping from one form of service into another, just at a different scale. In both worlds, people come first. Whether you’re running a dining room or supporting hundreds of businesses, the job is to listen, anticipate needs, and deliver value in a way that builds trust..

Stepping into the CEO role also required guiding the organization through a period of restructuring and recalibration, aligning legacy systems with modern expectations while honoring a century-long reputation. Change management is never easy, especially in an institution with deep roots, and there were moments where tough decisions had to be made with incomplete information and high stakes. Like many organizations, we also had to navigate economic uncertainty, evolving member needs, and the pressure to remain relevant in a rapidly changing business landscape.

Those moments of friction ultimately became the most valuable teachers. They reinforced the importance of transparency, adaptability, and surrounding yourself with strong people who challenge your thinking. I truly believe you grow the most when things aren’t easy. The struggles sharpen your perspective, clarify your priorities, and ultimately make you a better leader. Looking back, those obstacles weren’t setbacks, they were the proving ground that helped shape the Chamber into the resilient, forward-moving organization it is today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At its core, the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce exists to help businesses thrive by connecting the right people, ideas, and opportunities. We serve one of the most iconic business communities in the world, but our work goes far beyond the Beverly Hills name. We are a strategic partner for our members, supporting them through marketing exposure, advocacy, education, and meaningful relationship building that drives real business outcomes.

What sets us apart is our people-first approach. Much like hospitality, our focus is on experience and service. We listen closely to our members, understand their goals, and tailor opportunities that meet them where they are, whether they are a global brand, a family-owned business, or an emerging entrepreneur. With more than 150 events annually, curated programming, and direct access to city leadership and decision-makers, the Chamber acts as both a connector and a catalyst.

Brand-wise, I am most proud of the trust we have built over more than a century. Since 1923, the Chamber has played an integral role in shaping the Beverly Hills business landscape, helping create the global brand the city is known for today. That legacy matters, but we are equally focused on evolution. We are modernizing how chambers operate by combining tradition with forward-thinking strategy, data-driven marketing, and intentional community building.

What I want readers to know is that joining the Chamber is not just about visibility or a logo on a website. It is about becoming part of a highly engaged ecosystem that values collaboration, excellence, and impact. When members lean in and get involved, the return is exponential. We are proud to be the voice of business in Beverly Hills, and even more proud to be a trusted resource that helps our members grow, connect, and succeed for the long term.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is people and the impact we have on one another. At the end of the day, titles, numbers, and milestones only matter if they translate into meaningful outcomes for real people. That belief has guided my entire career, from hospitality to leading the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce. When you prioritize people first, whether employees, members, or the broader community, everything else tends to follow.

I care deeply about creating environments where people feel supported, heard, and empowered to succeed. That means helping businesses grow, mentoring team members so they leave stronger than when they arrived, and building a Chamber culture rooted in trust, collaboration, and excellence. I believe leadership is less about control and more about service. If I can help someone see new possibilities, navigate challenges, or feel more connected to their community, that is success to me.

Ultimately, what matters most is making a positive difference that lasts. Results come and go, but the way you treat people and the impact you leave behind is what defines your legacy.
