Exploring Life & Business with Sandra Ho of Avant Allergy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Ho.

Hi Sandra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story follows a familiar first-generation Asian American immigrant arc, built on resilience and grit. I grew up just east of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley. Raised by parents who were barely literate in their own language and thrust into a new country with few resources, our family of five struggled both economically and socially. At the age of 10, my father passed away, and that struggle multiplied. I took on heavy household responsibilities and became a classic 90’s latchkey kid. Through the daily trials of my youth, I developed a steely resolve to build a stable, brighter future through education. I graduated from college with dual majors, completed medical school, residency, and fellowship. Today, I am in solo private practice as an Allergist and Immunologist in West LA. I am also married and a mother of two daughters.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Self-doubt has been the greatest obstacle in my journey, and it took years to overcome this insecurity. Some days I am still struck by a healthy dose of impostor syndrome, but fortunately, those days are infrequent. Daily, I am still learning, and growing both personally and professionally.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I established Avant Allergy as a micropractice in late 2019 just months before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Despite this timing, Avant Allergy has grown into a regional leader in allergen immunotherapy. We are the only office in Southern California offering an innovative, groundbreaking treatment called Intralymphatic Immunotherapy (ILIT). Avant Allergy draws patients from all over the world as a premier destination for this life-changing therapy. Our small office allows the formation of strong connections with patients in a personalized, caring environment.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Physicians are notoriously self critical Type A personalities fixating on perfection while overlooking the wins. The most meaningful lesson I have learned is to sit back and allow myself to have pride in my accomplishments, while still honoring the sacrifices it took to get here.
