Exploring Life & Business with Nasim Gats of Nasim Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nasim Gats.

Hi Nasim, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
After working as a financial consultant for many years, I started to realize it’s not what I wanted to do anymore. In 2007, soon after finding out I was pregnant, the stock market tanked and I made the decision I wasn’t going to stay in the corporate world anymore, I was going to stay home to raise my child and make whatever sacrifices I needed to.

My husband is a post-production supervisor and at that time started working on a new, confidential reality TV show. They didn’t want one of the actors’ interviews leaked so instead of their interviews going out to a transcription company like normal, my husband asked if I could type out the interviews for their story producers instead. I figured why not, it’s an easy way to make money while my child napped. Next thing I knew, I was transcribing all the interviews from all the actors involved. The workload started to get too heavy to manage so, through a TV employment website, I hired a few transcribers to help. They were mostly stay-at-home mothers like myself or out of work TV staff. Word of mouth spread and other post supervisors heard about me and started reaching out for transcription help on their shows. That’s how Stag Post Production Services, Inc. was born.

Over a decade and hundreds of shows later, I’ve grown my business more than I thought possible while working from home, which was almost unheard of at the time! I now manage the accounting and day-to-day needs but no longer transcribe.

My focus has been able to shift toward something I’m actually passionate about and have been doing for decades, but for fun and not profit: interior design. A few years ago, I was asked to help design an apartment building from the ground up, this time for profit. I needed a business name quickly so Nasim Designs was created. Though my mother has her degree in interior design and my father is a real estate flipper and developer, I never thought about being an interior designer, even though I loved it. I was doing it for years for myself and gained so much experience, it seemed only natural to take it to another level.

Now, while I manage Stag Post Services, Inc., I also work on home remodels and redecorating. It’s a juggle between jobs, home and life needs. And with three boys, it’s busy!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It was definitely not a smooth road. Stag Post Services grew so fast I constantly felt I didn’t have enough help and was overwhelmed with meeting deadlines, sometimes transcribing until 3am or waking up at 3am to get it all done. There were no vacations, and I was on call 24/7 with very quick turnaround times. I never turned down work so hiring more people is what I had to do, even if it meant focusing on training and staying up late hours to get it all done. With babies and sleepless nights, the stress was intense and I wanted to quit many times.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My focus now is interior design, re-furnishing and redecorating, specializing in high traffic or active family homes. With three boys and pets, a durable, practical and timeless design is what I strive for. I offer consultation for those who are unsure about choices or a direction. I also help with complete remodels and manage the design process. Personal shopping is another option when clients somewhat know what they want but don’t have time to find or order the items.

Any big plans?
Perhaps one day, I’ll sell Stag Post Services, Inc. or hand it on or expand it. I’m hopeful to hone my niche and navigate the interior design world. I plan to learn more about the different facets of the business. There are so many avenues to explore especially with social media and new technology services available. Another plan is to travel! Getting more inspiration and exploring new textiles and cultures is certainly high on the plans list. Always learning, one step at a time.
