Exploring Life & Business with Jack Perry of Two Biscuit Records

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Perry

Hi Jack, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Throughout my life, music has always been at the epicenter. From a young age, my grandparents took me to see jazz concerts every summer at the Stanford University Jazz Festival, where I fell in love with live music.

Thanks to growing up amidst the diverse music scene in Oakland, and my father’s eclectic musical taste, I was exposed to a vast musical palette including Jazz, Soul, R&B, Hip-Hop, Rap, Latin & Classic Rock. After years of playing drums and piano in school bands, I started producing my own music during my senior year of high school in a music production course at Youth Radio where I learned how to make a beat and produce music on a computer. My interest in music management and other components of the music industry led me to enroll at Loyola University in New Orleans. Once there, I soon met Vinlisa, the artist I now manage and produce, and I also continued my own performances in local venues around New Orleans. I worked as a live sound engineer for campus events and as a recording engineer in the studios on campus.

After graduating during COVID, I moved to Los Angeles to continue my music career, producing events, like a Ladies’ R&B Night, and managing artists on my record label, Two Biscuit Records. I have DJ’ed and thrown numerous events in LA and the Bay Area, highlighting local independent artists.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey in the music industry has definitely not been a smooth road. Like a lot of artists, especially during COVID-19, I struggled to build a network and find a music industry job in a new city. When I couldn’t find a job in the music industry I had to start putting in my own events and creating work for myself and I became an EMT to help cover bills while pursuing a career in the music industry. Moving to LA was the best decision for me, but it has had its ups and downs.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Two Biscuit Records is an independent, artist-centered record label, supporting urban music artists in R&B, Soul, Hip-Hop & Rap genres. At Two Biscuit Records, we promote curiosity and enthusiasm for exploring new styles and content, to continue artist development while signed with us. Outside of our support for signed artists, in every aspect of business that we operate, we intend to uplift independent artists and ensure that in an industry where artists are often shortchanged and exploited, artists we work with are paid and treated fairly and respectfully. At Two Biscuit Records, we provide artist management services as well as, live sound, event and studio production, and DJ services. Email [email protected] for all of your live sound, studio, and event production needs.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My best advice to find a mentor would be always to be ready when the opportunity presents itself to you. Especially in Los Angeles, you never know who you might meet or what and who someone knows, so it is important to have work ready to show or an elevator pitch to share what you do. Be willing to put in the work and hustle for your dreams.
