Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Hendricks.
Brenda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Like most little girls, I was always drawn to the idea of feeling “pretty” and that meant getting into mom’s makeup and dressing up. I realized as I grew older that I had a love and desire to help others “feel pretty”. With my mind made up, as I was graduating High school, I set myself up to enroll at the local beauty school. I was really confident in my ability coming out of beauty school, so once I passed my state board exam, I immediately started working behind the chair. Nineteen years, hundreds of client relationships, and a few salons later, I found myself in a strange place in my career. I was comfortable, and I didn’t like it. I knew I had to make some changes, and until I knew exactly what that meant, I was willing to give myself some time to figure it out. Early 2022, my husband came across a listing for a business for sale in a prime location.
Despite the fact that I have 19 years of experience behind the chair, a wide range of clientele, and have been managing my own books all these years. It was nerve-wracking starting the transition of just me behind the chair to salon owner and working behind the chair. Nonetheless, with the support of my husband and so many others that continue to support me, I jumped right in! April 29, 2022 I took over a beautiful salon space “POSH” on Ventura Blvd in Old Town Camarillo. It has five stylist chairs, two suites, and an area for spray tanning. Ventura Boulevard is home to some great attractions, arts & entertainment, salons, spas, professional services, and some amazing food & drinks. We are also just 1 mile away from the famous Camarillo Outlets. There are so many great places surrounding my salon space that I was very excited to add my personal touch rebrand and make POSH Glam Studio a place that offers luxury services where the locals can feel at home and the “spot” where vacationers choose for their glam services or just to be pampered.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Let me tell you, it’s been a wild roller coaster ride! I heard from many friends about how hard the first year always is and to go easy on my myself, but I set very high expectations, and I was on a mission to rebrand and manifest my dream team. I spent my first few weeks reaching out to some of the most amazing stylists and estheticians I know to build my dream team. As I “waited” on them, I was constantly posting and reaching out to others to join my team, but I didn’t seem to have much luck in stylists wanting to rent a station. It definitely is discouraging at times, and it makes you question everything like “What am I doing wrong?” But I always try to look at things from a positive perspective, so I had to shift the thought of “what am I doing wrong?” to “What can I do to shine?” to stand out and draw people in. I had a clear vision of what I wanted for POSH Glam Studio, and every day seemed to get me closer; by the end of my first year, almost all of the professionals I had reached out to early on were a part of my team. They are all people that I’ve known for years! They are amazing at what they do, great work ethic, and it feel like home when are at work. We have the best time, and it really makes the “struggles” worth every day that I get to work alongside these individuals that brighten my day and are passionate about what they do.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I consider myself very blessed to have grown up in a safe and loving home with my parents and siblings. As well as extended family and friends that helped create so many wonderful memories. It’s hard to pick a favorite memory, but as it pertains to my career, I would have to pick the first one that comes to mind. I vividly remember being about 3-4 years old, sitting on the backrest of the couch over my mom’s shoulders, styling her hair. Brushing, sectioning, adding unmatched clips with twists, and anything I could come up with. I did this quite often, and I remember my mom enjoying it and making me feel good for being “such a good stylist”. My mom and I bring this memory up often, and I can see the pride on her face as she remembers it, almost as if she always knew this is where I would be today. Reflecting on so many memories, I appreciate so much how my family and friends have always been there for me and encouraged me to better myself.
