We’re looking forward to introducing you to Edgar Vicencio . Check out our conversation below.
Edgar, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. When was the last time you felt true joy?
I’d say that last time I felt true joy was noticing the growth of my students after this past summer. They have been training hard all summer long and having witness the process and seeing how they’ve grown at the end has truly made me feel so much joy! As a Dance coach, you feel accomplished. One of my students even won an MVP for a dance she had learned at a Dance Camp I took them too. Having a student of mine get the attention and praise from another Choreographer makes me feel so much joy and happiness! Makes me realize that I am doing something right as a coach and that my love and passion for dance is being passed on!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Edgar Vicencio. I am a Dancer, Choreographer, Director, and Content Creator. I have been dancing for 14+ years and have trained in multiple styles of Hip Hop, from Popping, Waving, Tutting, House, etc. I have been teaching dance for about 9 years, from ages starting at 6 to adults! I am the Founder and Director of BG Hip Hop Dance Team and also the Assistant Director for the Bell Gardens High School Dance Company. In addition to teaching, I also am a content creator. I have combined my love for dancing and making videos to create my online brand. I am known online as the “SpongeBob Dance Guy”, as I have become viral for a Dance I did resembling moves from a SpongeBob episode. I have created multiple viral dance videos since 2019 and have been invited to the Kids Choice Awards 2024, The American Dream Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and a few other places. I have also collaborated with companies such as Doritos Dinamitas, Mountain Dew, Dr. Squatch, Crocs, El Pollo Loco, and many more. My main goal in everything that I do is to inspired the youth and help them believe that they can do anything in life if they have the love and passion for it.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That everything I saw online or on TV was only for those people I’d see on there and that none of that would ever be possible for me. All the cool things I’d see people do on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram was not ever possible for me. Oh was I so wrong. If you truly have a passion for something, that passion will drive you to do many amazing things! My love and passion for dance has brought me so many amazing opportunities that I would’ve never thought was possible. Getting invited to the Kids Choice Awards, getting flown out to different states for cool opportunities, getting paid for making dance videos, all of this and so much more has blessed me and my life. This made me believe that anything is possible in life!
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Love yourself. That’s all you need. The moment I began to love myself was the moment I began to truly take care of myself. Loving yourself means doing everything possible to make sure you’re ok before anybody else. You can’t share your love towards people unless you give yourself some love first.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Public Edgar is the real Edgar. I like to be honest and truthful but also kind and helpful in real life and not just online. I truly love to share kindness and love in public because I believe we need more of that in this world. Working with students has made me truly open up to the world and try to display a kind of person that could be a positive role model for many young people today.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Every single time I get to work with my students, I get the most excited! Even if I’m not personally working with them, watching them work and seeing that drive and passion in them makes me so happy! In addition to that, I’ve always made dance videos for fun but now that I get opportunities to get paid for it, it makes me jump for joy even more! Having the opportunity to work doing something I love will always have me excited! Sharing my passions, whether in teaching or in content creation, brings me so much happiness.
