Today we’d like to introduce you to Wesley Amorim.
Wesley, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my music journey at a young age playing the drums, recorder and clarinet at the church I was raised in São Paulo, Brazil. I was introduced to guitar, my main instrument when I was 12 years old by my dad who had some basic knowledge of it. My music studies were a mix of learning from friends, private teachers and music conservatories, I have studied jazz, classical, rock, Brazilian music, arrangement, music production, and other subjects related to the music field.
At age of 17, I started my career as full-time musician working as a teacher and performer. Since the beginning, I had a passion for a large variety of music styles, what made me become a versatile musician and performing in a wide variety of places, genres and music-related work.
In 2014, I moved to the New York City area, where I had the opportunity to perform in places such as Carnegie Hall, Blue Note, Birdland, Joe’s Pub and others. Brazilian music was the genre that established my career in NYC as an independent artist, music producer and arranger. I started my own band called Zamb’up, released, produced and recorded my own projects and other artists as well. Being part of the album “Selfie” by the artist Jair Oliveira, nominated for the “2019 Latin Grammy Award for Best Portuguese Language Contemporary Pop Album. I have performed in Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America and throughout the US.
2021 I felt the urge to open my music horizons and explore where my music could take me. It was when I moved to Los Angeles. Ever since I had won the “2021 Lee Ritenour’s Dreamcatcher guitar contest”, a mentorship by the “Reel Change Film Fund” powered by the composer Christophe Beck, SESAC and administered by New Music USA and also started a sponsorship with “Yamaha Guitars”.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My passion towards music was always so strong that made all the paths become so inspiring, smooth and making all the challenges worth it. I do recognize that coming from a low-income family and being an immigrant has brought me challenges. Language berries, limited financial resources and work obstacles and connections.
In order to keep my path on its course made me faced some financial instabilities and fears, but nothing that was hard enough to make me give up, thankfully.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently, I work as a music producer and director for a new-age church called “Triumph Life Center”, where I have been releasing monthly music singles intended for spiritual and healing purposes. Media composer and music producer for the Brazilian publicity company called ‘S de Samba” having worked in campaigns for Nespresso, MasterCard, Itaú Bank, Qualy and others.
I had scored an independent movie called “B.L.A.C.K” by the actor and director Moses Verneau produced arrangements for an Argentinian kid’s music channel called “El Reino Infantil”.
I believe my background and my versatility stand me in a place that I will always have my own voice.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I have been working in several projects, making connections, and seeing many seeds I have planted growing daily. I am certain that once a project gets to a resourceful place, all the other projects I have work will come together making me give many steps ahead. Future seems to be a fruitful path.
