Today we’d like to introduce you to Weber Almeida
Hi Weber, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
For over 30 years, I’ve dedicated myself to karate. I am a professional MMA athlete, a karate instructor, and a children’s book author. Throughout this journey, I’ve discovered my passion: helping kids believe in themselves and never give up on their dreams.
I was born in Cuiabá, Brazil, and at the age of 4, a doctor told my parents I couldn’t participate in sports because one of my legs was longer than the other. Despite their concerns, I was determined to train with my dad, who was a black belt, and prove that I could earn a black belt too.
I wasn’t a natural when I started. My movements were awkward, I had zero coordination, and my anxiety and fear took over during tournaments. I lost every competition I entered for over 10 years. Despite the setbacks and repeated losses, I held onto a vision of what I could become. I spent hours outside of class practicing my movements and techniques, determined to improve. My parents’ belief in me, even when they worried, kept me going.
At 18, I won my first gold medal—a turning point in my life. It proved that my perseverance had paid off, giving me the confidence to keep pushing forward. Throughout my journey, I’ve collected numerous gold medals in karate, kickboxing, and jiu-jitsu, becoming a 6-time national champion, 5-time kickboxing champion, and Pan American champion under WAKO, the world’s largest kickboxing organization.
In 2015, I transitioned into a professional MMA fighter, but it was in 2019 that I made my debut in Bellator, one of the world’s largest MMA events, where I won my first fight by knockout. The previous year, in 2018, I moved to Los Angeles to assist UFC champion Lyoto Machida in preparing for an upcoming fight. During this time, I became part of the Machida team and took on the role of a children’s sensei at the Machida Karate Academy in Lomita, CA, owned by Chinzo Machida, where I have been teaching for the past six years.
Working with the Machida team not only sharpened my skills but also shifted my perspective. I realized that my true fulfillment came from seeing young kids develop their own confidence and skills, just like I had. Helping kids overcome their fears reminded me of my own journey and drove me to become a better sensei.
I found my true passion—teaching kids karate, helping them develop the mindset and confidence to chase their dreams and succeed in life. Now, I share this message through my book, “Benie’s Adventure Around the World”, where a little silverback gorilla learns about respect, persistence, and determination while finding his way back home. It’s based on my own experiences and shows kids that dreams can come true, just like mine.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has definitely not been smooth, but I never gave up on achieving my dream. From a very young age, I was told I wouldn’t be able to play sports due to my physical condition. I struggled with anxiety and a fear of failure, facing these challenges daily. But I refused to let them hold me back—I knew I could overcome them.
One of my biggest struggles came when I was 28. Like The Rock’s “7 Bucks” story, I had my own version. In February 2017, I was in Brazil, trying to make a name for myself as a professional fighter. Despite winning my first two pro fights by knockout, it was hard to find sponsors and opportunities. I sold everything I had and went to China with some friends, hoping to get discovered there. After a month of trying without success, I faced a tough decision and had no choice but to return to Brazil.
During a layover in São Paulo, instead of returning to my hometown of Cuiabá, I decided to stay. I had only $7 in my pocket and knew a friend who owned a gym in São Paulo. I made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t go back to my city until I had achieved my dream. I survived on a single meal a day, walking 15 kilometers round trip to a place where I could afford to eat—often a spot frequented by the homeless. Training for hours while hungry pushed me to my limits, but each step, each punch, and each struggle only fueled my determination to succeed. Despite the challenges, I trained at my friend’s academy and learned new martial arts like jiu-jitsu and judo from others who supported my journey.
An opportunity came when I met Vinicio Antony, a martial arts coach. I worked hard to find enough money to pay for just one of his classes, and after seeing my determination and skill, he offered me free training. Vinicio’s offer to train me for free was more than just a chance to improve my skills—it was a lifeline that reminded me I wasn’t alone. His belief in my potential during my darkest moments lit a fire in me that kept burning.
In 2017, another unexpected opportunity came my way when Lyoto Machida, a UFC champion, showed up at the gym I was training at. He invited me to join his training team, and soon after, I joined him in Los Angeles. When Lyoto Machida asked me to join his team, it felt like the moment my years of sacrifice had prepared me for. It wasn’t just a chance to train with one of my heroes—it was the validation of my entire journey. Moving to Los Angeles marked a new chapter, where my dream no longer seemed like a distant goal but a reality within reach.
On April 9, 2018, I arrived in Los Angeles—the place I had always dreamed of. On that very day, my journey took a new direction, and I knew that all the hardships I had faced had prepared me for this moment. This date is significant to me because it marks the very day I began my karate journey as a young kid. It felt like everything had aligned for a reason, as if my path had come full circle.
Looking back, those hardships in Brazil and the struggle to get to Los Angeles taught me the true meaning of resilience. They shaped the way I teach my students today, reminding them that every setback is a step toward something greater. I want them to know that with persistence, no dream is out of reach.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a professional MMA fighter, karate instructor, and children’s book author. My journey has been deeply rooted in martial arts for over 30 years, and today, I specialize in teaching karate to kids, helping them build confidence, resilience, and a strong mindset. As an MMA fighter, I’ve competed in Bellator and Karate Combat, winning the majority of my fights by knockout.
My true passion is teaching kids. I’ve found fulfillment in guiding young students through their martial arts journeys at the Machida Karate Academy in Lomita, CA, where I’ve served as a children’s sensei for the past six years. I love showing kids that no matter where they come from or what challenges they face, they can achieve their dreams if they believe in themselves. Having faced my own struggles—both physical and mental—and coming from a place with limited opportunities, I understand the importance of believing in one’s potential. My goal is to ensure that kids realize they have the power to choose their path and turn their dreams into reality.
What sets me apart is my commitment to believing in the dreams of the kids I teach, just as others once believed in mine. My mission is to be that person who inspires kids to think positively and helps them see that their dreams are closer than they might imagine. I know firsthand how transformative it can be when someone believes in you, and I strive to be that source of encouragement for each child I teach.
One of my proudest achievements is inspiring kids through my children’s book, Benie’s Adventure Around the World. It tells the story of a little silverback gorilla who learns about respect, persistence, and determination while finding his way back home—a story that mirrors my own journey. Seeing kids connect with this message and feel empowered to pursue their dreams is incredibly rewarding. My purpose in life is to make a lasting difference in the lives of these kids, helping them realize that – no matter who they are, or where they come from, they can achieve their dreams.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t be embarrassed by your story or feel like you don’t know how to do something. I often felt that way because I didn’t want to disappoint my mom and dad. There were times I struggled in training or felt overwhelmed by my journey, but I learned that vulnerability is part of growth. The people who truly love you will accept you for who you are, flaws and all.
It’s perfectly okay to have a bad day—just keep your head up and remind yourself: I tell the kids I teach everyday “You’re strong. you’re smart, and you can do ANYTHING.”
Embrace your journey, learn from your struggles, and remember that every step, no matter how small, is progress toward your dreams. Take the time to celebrate your small victories and don’t be afraid to seek support from mentors or peers. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your potential. Remember, persistence is key; each setback is simply a setup for a comeback. Stay focused on your goals, and never underestimate your ability to rise above challenges. Your journey is unique, and every experience, good or bad, shapes you into the person you’re meant to be.
