Today we’d like to introduce you to Nürnberg.
Hi Nürnberg, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We’re just two classmates who were inspired by ’80s music and decided to start our own band 10 years ago, called Nurnberg.
History is a hobby of ours. We chose the band name because the city of Nuremberg once had an association with the old Belarusian state – the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Around 1430, the old Grand Duke Vytaut was to become king and receive full sovereignty over his country. The crown for the great ceremony was made in Nuremberg. It was supposed to be an important historical moment for the whole of Europe, but it never happened: the crown disappeared for unexplained reasons. It was probably stolen in transit somewhere in Poland.
The answer is: We just love film photography, VHS cameras and analog recordings – because it’s the most honest way to convey our feelings artistically. Analogous things help to look at the present moment and convey it as it is. We also stick to this when we make music: If something has not been played perfectly, then we still leave it on the record, because we are neither robots nor computers and cannot play 100 percent correctly. We don’t even have a musical education – we taught ourselves to play guitars and synthesizers. The digital society, on the other hand, corrupts and forces us to the ideal, but this ideal does not exist at all. The only ideal we know is the Berlin band of the same name from the Neue Deutsche Welle in the early 80s.
music from the 80s still sounds modern, fresh and experimental today. But we wouldn’t say that we make music in the style of the 80s – we make modern Belarusian music based on traditions. We did not choose this sound, it was dictated to us by the environment.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
t the beginning of 2020, we canceled our planned first European tour because of the pandemic, which was very disappointing for us. That’s why our top principle in life is now: You should not expect anything! Because the more expectations you have, the more disappointments there are if these expectations are not met.
As a band from Belarus, it is very difficult to perform in EU and US, because we face challenges in obtaining European visas, and especially American visas. Our main audience is based in the United States. We would love to perform there, but unfortunately, the visa remains the biggest obstacle on our path. However, we are eagerly waiting for the opportunity to share our music with American listeners
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Jury (vocals, bass) and Aleh (guitar) live and work in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, the largest landlocked country in Europe, also known as Belarus. The young men indulge in the darkly romantic pop design: wave and post-punk in the style of bands like The Cure or Indochine.
We take great pride in being able to promote our culture in other countries, showcasing our language and our unique musical style. It’s an honor for us to represent where we come from and share a piece of our heritage with audiences around the world
What does success mean to you?
Success is about expressing your true self through various pursuits. It means having the opportunity to do what you love, fulfill your creative potential, and share your energy with the world, while also meeting both your financial and personal needs. In the end, success is simply about enjoying what you do.
