Today we’d like to introduce you to Suki Li.
Hi Suki, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My path toward filmmaking has been a complex one. As a double major graduate in Art History and Applied Mathematics from Syracuse University, I honed my analytical skills and critical thinking through my studies in both fields. Although I couldn’t initially see the connection between the two, I had faith that the pieces would eventually fall into place. It wasn’t until much later that I realized my true calling was in filmmaking.
In 2020, I enrolled in the American Film Institute, where I majored in producing. There, I met like-minded fellows with whom I hope to collaborate for years to come and learned invaluable skills from dedicated teachers. AFI was the beginning of my journey toward achieving my dream of becoming a filmmaker.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No road is ever smooth when you are paving your own way. As a producer, I handle a lot of stress, and it’s not unusual for me to feel the pressure of balancing creative ideas with the reality of production, including budget and time constraints. I have also faced the challenge of having to communicate and collaborate with directors and writers to achieve the story in a more cost-effective way. Despite the struggles, I have received so much help from my friends and fellow filmmakers, and I truly appreciate their support. Being surrounded by them gives me the strength to keep going.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a creative producer who specializes in producing a variety of content, including short films, commercials, music videos, and web series. I am known for my ability to work closely with directors and writers during the development process, helping to shape their ideas and bring their visions to life.
One of my most significant accomplishments is having my documentary short film, <Langue>, selected by the Student Academy, Palm Springs Shortfest, and Pingyao International Film Festival. It was a great honor to have my work recognized by these prestigious organizations.
Recently, I completed work on a new project called “In Wonderland,” which I am excited to promote during its festival run this year. I am proud of the work that I have done, but what truly sets me apart from others is my passion for collaborating with others and bringing out the best in each team member. My focus is always on the development process and helping to create compelling characters that resonate with audiences.
What’s next?
In the future, I plan to expand my work more into commercials and music videos. I have a lot of experience in producing projects and bringing them to life within schedule and budget constraints, and I am confident that I can apply this expertise to these areas. I have also accumulated enough resources to take on bigger and more ambitious projects. I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and am looking forward to collaborating with new creative teams and clients.
