Today we’d like to introduce you to Spencer/FREDDY.
Hi Spencer/FREDDY, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a singer/songwriter. I also teach hot yoga and meditation. I have been singing since I was a little girl. Probably 4 or 5. I started my professional career in music at 20 years old and have been going after it ever since. The pressure of the industry took a huge toll on my self worth to be honest. I did not and do not want to give up so I needed to find a coping mechanism. I found so much healing through yoga and meditation. I have been a student of both for many years. I did my 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training three years ago in Costa Rica with Jonny Kest’s son, Jonah. I also went on my first 5 day silent retreat at Spirit Rock Insight Meditation Center in Northern California this past August. It was truly the most life changing experience of my life and has helped me tremendously more than anything else I’ve ever done. I currently teach at Westlake Yoga Co in Westlake Village and Good Point in Malibu.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ha! Not at all. Very up and down. I am in a place where I am trying to not give too much energy to the negative and challenging experiences I’ve dealt with. I feel my pursuits are so opposite of one another, too. One is like me me me listen to me look at me and the other is like SHH ego! Separate yourself from ALL thoughts! You are an insignificant speck! I am currently surrendering to my journey, aiming to just keep working hard, making music, writing, teaching and letting myself be on my own timeline without fear or worry.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am about to release a new single. It’s called “Hold it Down”. I wrote it many years ago with a good friend named Sahaj Ticotin. I feel that I need to release it finally. I am writing a lot and trying to decide if I want to release an EP or album in the new year or just keeping putting out singles.
I am playing Venice Fest in the heart of Venice on Saturday, November 22nd. It’s a Winter/Holiday themed street fair, so I’ll definitely be singing a few Christmas songs and one of my own holiday songs I wrote a few years ago called “Snow on my Boots.” I have always wanted to play a holiday show so I am really excited.
As far as what I am most proud of, I think in my community I am known for being a very supportive, optimistic, and transparent person. I really try to live my life glass half full, wildly authentic, while speaking love and warmth into as many people as possible. I genuinely want to leave people better than I find them.
I teach free yoga in the park on Sunday mornings and I feel very proud of that. I love creating a space for community to gather and breathe and move and feel in nature. No music. Just the sound of the birds and the breeze. Growing in strength and love. I really am just trying to grow. Each and everyday. Be better than who I was the day prior. Reminding myself I am in competition with no one, but myself.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
