Today we’d like to introduce you to Riccarda Richter.
Hi Riccarda, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey in front of the camera started with my TV shoot for “Professor T.” (ZDF). I had already completed my acting training by then and had taken an intensive course at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. Even as a child, there was no question that I would be drawn to the film and television industry. I loved playing in different characters and dive deep into fantasy worlds.
For example, I slept three days in a basket because I really wanted to portray a dog or I drove my mom crazy making her believe I could do real magic. So I went to an acting school for children and young people, acted in teen musicals and joined the theater club. Later, I then changed the stage for appearances on “Laeusemutter” (Sat.1), “55 steps” (starring Helena Bonham Carter and Hillary Swank) and the short film “Cord of Three” by Sophia Kindt, for which I have won Best Actress of the year 2023 for my leading role as Nun Christa at the Indie Short Fest in LA. I am very honored and so grateful for this award. I can’t express how emotional I was on that night. It made me really happy to see how diverse our industry became and how many beautiful movies were shown that day. I identify myself as a member of the queer community and that’s why I’m very moved seeing LGBTQIA projects like “Cord of Three” getting recognition! Thanks to my job I’m able to support organizations like IGLYO, the world’s largest LGBTQIA youth and student network with more than 100 member organizations in over 40 countries across Europe.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh no. I can’t remember all the times I was laying down in bed crying. Though, we know it’s part of it. I still remember a casting which I desperately wanted to get. The character was a player in the first national women soccer team in the 50s and the project itself was very feminist. The problem was I didn’t know how to really play soccer. So I woke up every single day at 6 am to train and in the end, I didn’t get the part. Ohhhhhh – you have no idea how devastated I was. However, choosing a career in the entertainment industry won’t mostly be a smooth ride and that’s the beautiful part in it. Ups and downs are part of the job. If I wouldn’t care about it why did I choose this job in the first place? We have to be willing to see the bigger picture. This character wasn’t for me and accepting that was such a relief. I always say: Show up, do the hard work, but don’t expect it to happen the way you want. I got my recent lead through a casting which I did more than five years ago because the director remembered my performance.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In 2021, I dealt with subjects with my short film “My Girlfriend’s Parents” that also accompany me privately: society, diversity, and homosexuality. It was an amazing experience not only writing a film but to see the audience’s reaction and encouragement. The film reflects our diversified society in so many ways. Today there are more different life plans than ever before. And the fact that there is a big bang in some families is universal. That’s why it was so important for me to write and produce that movie.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Supporting my work is also supporting what I believe in. Being involved in new LGBTQIA projects is giving my voice the space to reach a bigger audience. That‘s why I‘d love to collaborate with many more talented queer and / or feminist artists.
