Today we’d like to introduce you to Paige Lefever.
Hi Paige, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Barks of Love was founded by Ashley Cunningham in 2008 and I joined the team in 2014 as Vice President. I eventually took on the role of President and held that position until January 1, 2024 when I became Board Chair. I joined the team after answering a call for a need for volunteers to help at an adoption event. I realized quickly that I loved what this rescue stood for and how they operated and knew I needed to be more involved. After speaking with Ashley in depth at the event, we both realized we had the same philosophy for dog rescue, and that was the start!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course not! There are more good days than bad in rescue but the struggles are the same you get with any organization. We had years of difficulties finding dedicated volunteers and myself and two other members did most of the work up until the last 2-3 years. I think a lot of people feel they know what is involved, but when they actually join, they realize how much harder it is.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my day job, I work in Visual Merchandising, but I have been able to take so much of what I’ve learned in my career to the rescue. What I am most proud of is the reputation we have built in the community. We have such strong partnerships with local businesses and the support has kept us going. I take a lot of pride in that because it is a reflection of who we are and what we stand for. It shows me that people see what we are doing. We are a small rescue with a big outreach. At most times, there are only about three people doing the hands-on work – processing adoptions, taking dogs, finding fosters, running social media, attending events, etc. We are a truly grassroots organization with a passion for dogs and the community.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
For me, it’s about transparency. I am always honest with every person who wants to be involved with our group – whether it be a volunteer or partner. I think it’s important to talk about the good and the tough. I also think it’s important to let anyone who reaches out to me for mentorship or advice know that we are all just learning as we go! There are no handbooks or guidelines to dog rescue. It’s about doing what is right for the dog and that is different for every single life we rescue.
