Today we’d like to introduce you to Novaczar The Empress Of The Galaxy
Hi Novaczar, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Well, I grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia doing musical theater at a very young age and then I went to an art high school for musical theater in Norfolk, Virginia called The Governor’s School for the Arts and then I went to Columbia College Chicago for musical theater and I started doing drag when I was about 18 years old. I always viewed myself as a leading lady, but as a non-binary individual, I felt that the roles that I authentically wanted to play in the world of musical theater did not exist, and therefore when I discovered DRAG, I started taking it seriously when I was in college and made the decision to just focus on DRAG because I felt like I could live out those leading lady fantasies I always wanted to when I was a little kid and DRAG has allowed me that artistic freedom.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has absolutely not been smooth. I have always faced a lot of adversity and felt that I was very misunderstood in not only my home life and especially during my childhood but once I started to get into the world of drag, I felt like all I was doing was working really really hard to try to impress people and to try and get as many opportunities as I could to share my art and there have been multiple times and tribulations where people in the community have tried to shun me out and make it so that I would not be able to continue to share my art, but thankfully, I have used that kind of pushback as fuel and now I use it as a sort of an inspirational success story because I am still able to share my art to this day and to me that feels like a blessing.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Well, there are a lot of drag queens that moved to New York City who are musical theater rejects and I like to pride myself on not feeling like a reject from the musical theater world but feeling like I made the conscious decision to stop doing musical theater because I just didn’t feel that I belonged in that world in the way that I felt I could have had someone from an early age believed in what I could bring to the world of musical theater that I did not see being offered or created. I think I am most proud of being able to sustain a regular income by my art alone as a New York City Drag Queen and one of my achievements was recently winning the entertainer of the year at the New York City, get out magazine awards, and being a part of the queen of the universe cast of season one. I am known for my singing and my out of this world creative looks, and conceptual showmanship theatrical produced performances. I always like to tell people to never expect something for me and to always expect the unexpected because the art that I like to produce is always changing and evolving.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I think one of the most surprising things about me that people might not know is that I lost both of my parents at a very young age and have basically had to raise myself and push through such difficult times trauma and adversity.
