Daily Inspiration: Meet Mason St Peter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason St Peter.

Hi Mason, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It started with skate ramps, an 80’s childhood bookended by two curved surfaces that reached up to the sky… much later I would move from Los Angeles to San Francisco to formalize my interest in architecture through studies at California College of the Arts, CCA.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Along the way I took some chances, ventured down a few alternate roads, tried on some different hats, started a couple retail businesses, (Two Birds Fly, General Store) worked in some big offices, (Studios) and some small ones, (Schwartz and Architecture) moved from SF to LA, started a family and went out on my own (founded my own firm), MSP Design Inc.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I design homes for people. This process includes permits, interiors, landscape, furniture, construction observation and beyond. I have clients who call me years later and ask for my advice on a potential new rug they’re looking into maybe buying… I’ve designed custom built in sofas, beds, bookshelves, entertainment cabinets, murals and outdoor furniture. I think I’m probably best known for my minimal aesthetic. The goal for me, is to design a space that has everything you’ll need so that you can fill it with your own personal items that reflect your culture and your philosophy on life. Colour and texture are essential in a home and I encourage clients to bring their own vision through their personal effects.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Mostly my influences are nature and the natural processes of daily life. Listening and looking, also essential. I try my hardest to listen when people speak and to hear what they’re saying… this isn’t always as easy as it might seem because we often don’t say specifically what we mean.
