Daily Inspiration: Meet Markima Carroll

Today we’d like to introduce you to Markima Carroll.

Hi Markima, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started braiding hair at 7 years old . I decided to go to marinello school of beauty and take my God given talents seriously.I graduated and became licensed in 2014 . In the beginning of 2015, my little brother and grandfather passed away which the grief took a major toll on me . I took 4 1/2 years off and was blessed with two additional children .On July 4, 2019, I woke up and was attacked by my abusive partner .Long story short I went to jail for six days . Within that time I spent away from my children , I decided this is the last time! I will not let anyone have so much control over me and my destiny. When I was released I had nothing ! Public storage stole all my belongings all my hair tools . I lived in my car with my three children . During this time I realized I haven’t worked in 4 close to five years I had no money . I put in several applications and started looking for housing . I was very prideful and private. God put it on my heart to let that go ! I was hurting myself , I needed help . So I went to the welfare office and seen a women who I was in a domestic violence support group with. She asked me ,” Markima how are you , I haven’t seen you at group therapy ?” In that moment God told me to let it out , let go !” I was obedient and I told the women everything I was going through . It felt like it was no one in the room but the women God and myself . After I confessed everything I was going through, she gave me an address and said go there and tell them exactly what you told me . And the next day I did just that . I filled out the application for housing . It was around Halloween when my Aunt called me . She didn’t know what I was going through from my knowledge but she offered to buy my children costumes. So I agreed to meet up with her . Again God put it on my heart to discuss what I was going through to my aunt and she offered her spare room to my children and I . I agreed but , that same day cps called me and requested that they had to make sure my children were okay . I agreed to meet with them and had to disclose this information to my aunt and asked her can she help me . She agreed and I was so thankful . Cps decided to open a case on me and my children based on the the things my abuser told them (all lies). Now with the world on my shoulders ,I had to prove that I was a good parent and able to take care of my children . Then I got a call from that office I told my story to and filled the application out for housing . After sleeping in my car , getting kicked out my grandmother house and being denied for ever single or one bed room apartment I applied for . They said Markima come view your home . I cried when they disclosed what type of housing they approved me for . It was more than I asked God for . I am so grateful. When I moved in I knew that this was the beginning for my children and myself . I began to network . I started volunteering and doing hair for free just to start my reputation in the world . One day I got a direct message in instagram from a childhood friend . He told me to go to a casting call for a fashion show for the brand “Ellaè Lisquè”. I was casted for the show as a hairstylist. There I met the amazing celebrity makeup artist Alex Jairus and , we instantly became friends . He introduced me to Brooklyn Frost , woah Vicky , Heather Rose who also introduced me to 42Dugg. This is where my career started . I just want to thank my Lord and savior Jesus Christ for putting me in the right spaces and putting my name on my childhood friend RYANS mind to contact me for the casting call. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I gave up .

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been everything but a smooth road during this journey . I’m thankful for all the lessons that turned into blessings . Cps didn’t take my children , I wasn’t homeless living in my car with my three children and I began to start doing what I’ve always loved to do since I was 7years old . Forever grateful and thankful that I didn’t give up when everything that could possibly break me did not succeed. God said he wouldn’t put nothing on me that I couldn’t handle with Jesus walking beside me .

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in natural hair care and protective styles . I am most know for my braids neat parts. I am most proud of my faith because without faith and without Jesus I would have nothing I would be nothing . What set me apart from others is my love and passion for the craft of not only making people feel good about themselves but making people look good for the people they entertain on a daily basis.
