Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorelay Bove.
Hi Lorelay, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Lorelay Bové
Production Designer
Walt Disney Animation Studios
I grew up in Principality of Andorra with my parents and siblings. Surrounded by artists, my father being a contemporary abstract painter, always supported my siblings and I to pursue art. We were surrounded by paints, charcoal, pastels and pencils. My father had a Preston Blair book of how to draw animation and since then I was attracted like a magnet to the world of Animation.
After High School, I knew I wanted to go into animation and my father help me find a good school for animation called Cal Arts. I didn’t get in after I submitted my portfolio. So I went to Laguna College of Art and design for 2 years. After that I thought to myself that in 2 more years I probably would not be ready in the industry so I took a year off to build my portfolio for Cal Arts. After working hard on the portfolio I finally got into the school. I attended Cal Arts for 4 years, and after my 3rd year I got accepted at Disney Animation Studios as an intern. After completing my 4th year I got into the Pixar Animation Studios internship for a summer and then got accepted at Disney Animation Studios as a trainee and I have been there since. It has been 18 years now at the company.
Here is my bio from Disney Animation:
LORELAY BOVÉ, associate production designer on Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Academy Award®-
winning “Encanto,” previously worked in visual development for the Oscar®-winning films “Big Hero 6”
and “Zootopia.” Prior to that, she contributed her talents as lead designer of Sugar Rush for the big-
screen comedy “Wreck-It Ralph.” She counts among her Disney Animation credits influential visual
direction and development roles on the features “The Princess and the Frog,” “Tangled,” “Winnie the
Pooh,” and the short film “Tangled Ever After,” as well as on the multiple Emmy® Award-winning TV
special “Prep & Landing.” For the latter, she played a key role in designing backgrounds, character
costumes, color scripts and numerous other elements.
Born in Barcelona, Spain, and raised in the principality of Andorra, Bové is part of a family of gifted
artists (her father is renowned painter Quim Bové), and art has always been a way of life for her. After
graduating in 2007 from the prestigious CalArts, she made her entry into animation as an art intern at
Pixar Animation Studios.
In addition to her visual development work for Disney’s animated films, Bové has also provided
illustrations for several Little Golden Books, including “The Princess and the Frog,” “Toy Story: Ride ‘em
Cowboy!” and “Wreck-It Ralph.” Her work was also featured at the New Orleans Museum of Art’s
exhibition “Dreams Come True: Art of the Classic Fairy Tales from The Walt Disney Studios,” as well as
other art exhibits around the world. Bové is the illustrator of the Walt Disney Animation Studios Artist
Showcase book, “No Slurping, No Burping!: A Tale of Table Manners.” She has also created new
artwork for each of Walt Disney Records’ 12 albums in “The Legacy Collection.”
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not been accepted at Cal Arts was rough and taking a year off to build a portfolio and worked really hard filling in sketchbooks was challenging but gratifying. I enjoyed drawing and painting and I never gave up.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work now as a Production Designer at Disney Animation Studios. I’m a visual development artist, I work in the art department at Disney, where we build worlds, characters, costumes and color. I’m known for having a good sense of color. I’m very proud to be working at Disney and achieving my dream of working in animation and loving what I do every day. I love imperfection and personality and I feel my work has that.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
