Daily Inspiration: Meet JChris (Chris Urquiaga)

Today we’d like to introduce you to JChris (Chris Urquiaga).

Hi JChris, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started off as an independent artist and I eventually found my voice and sound in urban Latin music. I went to the Eastman School of Music and had a classical music background. I wanted to carve my own identity and do more research into my Brazilian & Peruvian heritage. Through that research and effort, I eventually found my niche. My niche is making urban Latin music for my gay Latino audience.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been smooth. A lot of struggles (financial, identity, personal, etc.) have occurred throughout my journey but all of those obstacles made me a stronger person and artist. Because of those obstacles, I am now an artist with an even greater story to tell. Coming out was a long process for me but I’m glad I finally did it and that I now live my truth loudly.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am now producing new music with other queer Latinx artists from different countries. I eventually want to make another album but I want to make my songs as high quality and unique to me as possible. I currently have 2 confirmed featured artists from Colombia. They are Den$o and Lomaasbello. They are prolific artists and have extraordinary talents in writing and performing. I am so excited to release music with them!

I am also in the process of writing a musical comedy. It’s very much a work in progress but one that I feel proud of and excited for. Stay tuned on that!
As an artist, I also try to live up to my reworked and updated artist description below.
JChris, an urban Latin singer-songwriter known for a smooth voice and high-energy Spanish-English performances. His music transcends boundaries, infusing Latin, Afro and Brazilian influences and exploring themes of gender fluidity and queer culture.

JChris, un cantautor latino urbano conocido por una voz suave y actuaciones en español e inglés de alta energía. Su música trasciende fronteras, infundiendo influencias latinas, afro y brasileñas y explorando temas de fluidez de género y cultura queer.

How do you think about happiness?
