Daily Inspiration: Meet J.T. Hiskey

Today we’d like to introduce you to J.T. Hiskey.

Hi J.T., so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always been a music lover my entire life. I started making and performing music when I was only 12 years old with my guitar. It wasn’t until my junior year at Highland High School in Salt Lake City, Utah that I started getting more into recording and releasing songs. Shortly after I started releasing songs through the internet, I ended up doing assemblies at high schools. Pop Punk music has always been my most favorite genre, as I listened to every pop punk band you could imagine when I was in high school. Now here I am today getting to perform and still keeping things rad always!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Yes and no to be honest. It takes a lot of work and dedication to the industry, and that is something I didn’t fully understand when I was younger in high school. Now, after being on many different tours and such, I fully understand and see how much effort that every band that I looked up to has to put in to make the magic happen and keep their careers rolling. A ton of people talked down on me in high school and told me I wouldn’t even be able to do the things I have gotten to do today, and for that I am proud of. Right now, I am currently also going to nursing school to become a registered nurse someday soon, and I have really had to find a well balance between being a punk rocker and student. As far as the music industry itself goes, you get what you put in. If you put in dedication and effort into your pathway, you will be on the right path to begin with.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I consider myself as the nursing student pop punker. But for reals though, I specialize in the punk rock genre. People who loved Vans Warped Tour is the crowd I mainly base myself in. I welcome in everyone though through every genre and corner. I actually just got home a few days ago from a tour I did with my good friend Afroman, and that was such a unique experience itself. Such a different crowd compared to what I usually perform in front of, but I absolutely loved it. This tour showed me that there is no specific certain crowd that I belong in front of, and that’s something I will never forget!

I am proud of so much because I have had so many amazing opportunities just like that in my music career that not many people could have. From being featured on Jimmy Fallon to playing some of my dream venues, I am proud of myself… but I honestly couldn’t have done any of this without any of my supporters. They are the ones who keep me going and inspire me every single day. Without any of them, I wouldn’t be able to be here doing what I am doing now. I am not lucky, I am blessed.

What sets me apart from others has to be my unique style. Yes, I do pop-punk music, but what I mean by style is how I create and fun with my songs. Songs such as You’re My World and Twerk That are songs that many pop punkers would never think about making. I am myself, and I love to keep people wonder what I will be doing next with my music.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Other than all my nursing student books and such, I don’t really use any other resources at the moment. I have been trying to stay off social media more by living in the moment. I live my best life always but I do think it’s been healthy limiting my time on the apps.
