Daily Inspiration: Meet Hunter Blaze Pearson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hunter Blaze Pearson. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Hunter Blaze Pearson is based in Southern California where he was born and raised. He graduated from Malibu High School in 2018 and immediately began working full-time as an artist. Hunter is best known for his custom shoe work, which has garnered the attention of high-profile clients such as Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo. Mr. Levine then hired Hunter to design concert merchandise for Maroon 5, and most recently a pair of Kobe Bryant shoes as a tribute to LA’s legend.

Hunter’s main focus is on fine art, creating pop art paintings and large scale multimedia works. He works in several mediums including acrylics, gouache, colored pencil, and resin. He has been singled out for his photorealistic pencil work, which he incorporates along with acrylic and resin in his multimedia pieces. His work is currently on display at Tracy Park Gallery in Malibu and Silo118 Art Gallery in Santa Barbara.

Hunter’s client list is diverse, from designing Maroon 5 merchandise and limited edition signature earbuds for Ultimate Ears to logos and branding for LA County and custom art pieces for individual clients.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I was lucky to always have support from my mom, my friends, and my teachers, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing. First off, I was born legally blind, which doesn’t usually predispose one to being a good artist haha. Although it appears to be a disadvantage, I actually think it has helped me as an artist because I have less depth perception than a person with normal vision. Since my vision is more 2D, I think it’s easier for me to see the lines and shapes in the world. The other big roadblock for me was the Wolsey Fire in 2018. My mom and I lost our house and the majority of the artwork I’d done up till that point. I had dozens of sketch pads and probably hundreds of paintings and drawings from my childhood scattered about the house. Unfortunately, we were evacuated very quickly so we only had time and room to bring about 6 of my most cherished pieces. It was a heavy blow but it taught me about the fragility of not just my work but all possessions that we take for granted. My work since the fire has really evolved and matured, so I look at the fire as a bookend to the training period of my life. It would obviously be nice to have my old work, but now I feel more free to attempt new and dating concepts without comparing them to my previous work and styles.

How do you define success?
In an artistic sense, success is accessing the ideas only you possess, refining them, and bring them to fruition, all while maintaining your original vision. If you can articulate an artistic idea into a tangible creation that resonates with an audience, you’ve done the job. It is that resonation that can bridge the gaps between people, communities, cultures, and the whole world ultimately.
