Today we’d like to introduce you to Hasmik Amirian.
Hi Hasmik, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
A native of Armenia, I began my studies at the age of seven at the Armenian Choreographic Ballet Institute. I was trained in the Vaganova (Russian) method by teachers who had been trained by Agrippina Vaganova herself. After graduating, I joined the Armenian National Opera Ballet Theatre, where I rose quickly through the ranks and was promoted to a soloist.
In 1992, after several successful tours, I immigrated to the United States. I began performing as a guest artist with companies such as Marla Bingham Contemporary Ballet, Nima Kiann’s Les Ballet Persans, Kalinin Dance Company, and in 1995 joined Los Angeles Classical Ballet as a soloist and made Los Angeles my permanent home.
I am now a Master Ballet Teacher in Los Angeles. In 2002, I joined Marat Daukeyev School of Ballet teaching advanced level and pre professional ballet students. In 2007 I was promoted to assistant director where I held that position until 2017.
In 2017, I then went on to start my very own ballet school, Hasmik Amirian Ballet, and daily train dancers many of whom have gone on to have professional careers.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges has been finding space to train my dancers. Real estate that can be modified with sprung floors at an affordable rate has been very difficult.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
How to teach dancers. Building a syllabus and working on techniques that create quick and effective lasting change.
