Today we’d like to introduce you to Emerald Terrell.
Hi Emerald, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was always a rambunctious kid—full of energy, very creative, and constantly dancing around. Like many little girls, my mom enrolled me in dance at just three years old, and from that moment on, my love for dance only grew stronger. I attended every convention and competition I could, learning from top-tier choreographers and meeting incredibly talented dancers—all while traveling and doing what I loved.
Around the same time, Instagram was starting to gain popularity. It really took off during my high school years. Wanting better-quality photos to post, I picked up the most basic camera I could find at Walmart. That simple decision sparked a new creative passion.
About a year later, I was given an amazing opportunity to travel and tour the U.S., photographing dancers. It felt like a full-circle moment—combining my first love, dance, with my growing passion for photography. I’m so grateful I get to bring those two worlds together in my work today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey into photography was completely unintentional. I bought my first camera simply to take better Instagram photos. With that same camera—and zero knowledge of photography, especially capturing movement—I ambitiously applied for a dance photography job.
Learning the basics of photography while also diving into the specialized world of movement stills was definitely a challenge. But during that experience, something clicked. My passion for dance photography took off, and it gave me the freedom to start discovering and shaping my personal vision as a photographer.
Of course, there have been moments of self-doubt and overthinking along the way. But overall, it’s been a smooth and incredibly rewarding journey—and I’m so grateful for where it’s taken me and where it’s headed.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a dance and portrait photographer with a strong focus on dance photography. I’m passionate about capturing the storytelling behind choreography, translating movement and emotion into powerful images. With a detail-oriented and efficient approach, I thrive in the fast-paced world of dance. My extensive background in dance allows me to recognize proper technique and anticipate those picture-perfect moments, ensuring each shot reflects the authenticity and emotion of the performance.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I believe social media has a huge impact on today’s society, especially in creative industries. You never know who might be scrolling through your Instagram, looking for their next photographer in your area. It’s also an amazing tool for outreach—you can directly message potential clients and promote yourself in a way that wasn’t possible before. It’s powerful, so don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and shoot your shot!
