Daily Inspiration: Meet Diego Razo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diego Razo.

Hi Diego, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My Dad has been in the game for years, what started off as a hobby became a business with employees. All my old school music knowledge comes from him, whether it’s funk and freestyle or Old House and Circus disco. When I was 14 my dad let me roadie for him and I learned the ropes. I would practice everyday at lunch in the stairwells once I got my own tiny set up. Often times no speaker just a laptop, controller and headphones, none the less I was obsessed. My DJ career started off at a house party in the valley, performing at other high-schools while still in high-school my self. As I got older, I began to DJ at a Reggaeton Club in Hollywood. I taught a friend of mine how to DJ and he put his own dark spin on things. My friend Ivan introduced me to the world of post punk and EBM and he started to get gigs of his own and quickly. When he invited me out to a bar called The Office where I met the most genuine, loving, funny promoter Sana Ansari. I introduced myself, she took a shot on me and I have been her Resident DJ ever since. Because of her I was able to perform at the Regent and Pray I get to perform other venues and even bigger stages.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The DJ life has made me so happy to see family and friends dancing to complete strangers screaming their heart out to my song selections. When I started,I would stay in the same Serato Crates in the same genre. It became boring, there was no challenge, like a level you already beat on a video game. Then I expanded my horizons and tried mixing new things like Latin Music and Afrobeats and then there was an overwhelming sensation of not knowing what to play. Both times I started questioning if this is what I wanted to spend my time doing but still I stayed. My dad inspired me to DJ with a partner in the clubs like he used to. Thus I co-created a group and shortly after, personal issues and creative differences arose because family and Business do not mix. To quote the late Nipsey Hustle, “ I went through every emotion trying to pursue what I’m doing.”

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Dj. I specialize in Funk, Freestyle, Darkwave, and 2010 club bangers. I am most known for the energy I bring, plans could change in a heartbeat so no matter the crowd I will adapt. I’m most proud of my song selections, my transitions and my ability to read crowds. Any party, any aesthetic, anywhere.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
As a DJ, I actually hate the club as a non DJ. It’s so annoying but now my brain is wired to think of the next song and how I would mix out of it. And yes I’m secretly judging you if you’re on.
