Today we’d like to introduce you to Cydney Johnson
Hi Cydney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am the co-founder and chef of NeverMeasure Soul Food Supper Club along with my sister, TaMara.
I am delighted to share more of my personal story here.
I have been in the kitchen lifting pot tops and smelling what’s inside of them since I was 5 years old. The coming together of spices and ingredients from the earth has always fascinated me. Since the first moment I explored my curiosity of how a meal came together in my grandmother’s (who I called Honey) kitchen, I knew that I wanted the kitchen baton (her old trusty spoon) passed to me.
As you may know, the title of our supper club is rooted in the fact that many of our Black ancestors and elders were rarely using measurements for their cooking. It was always about having a feeling for each ingredient and how it would work with the others in a dish. When I understood the robust or light, sweet or bitter qualities of ingredients I rarely found myself measuring them ever again. I am so grateful to have this connection to food.
From family gatherings of 50 plus people, community cookouts for my grandmother’s business called WWAM and now NeverMeasure, providing nourishment and nurturing others through food has always felt like a really important factor in fulfilling my purpose.
10 years of working in hospitality as a host, server, manager, expo and now traveling chef has supported me tremendously in arriving here today. I’ve learned so much about creative direction of an atmosphere and environment from the table and chairs to the lighting, music and even choice of spoons in order to envision and bring to life the exquisite suppers that are NeverMeasure.
It only feels aligned for me now that I am zooming out from the perspective of food through the eyes of the modern day food and beverage industry, and that I now zoom into the vast influence the African diaspora crops and agriculture has had on much of the cuisine in the world, especially the US til this very day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been 1 and a half years since the start of the supper club and it has been filled with challenges.
The greatest challenge being receiving venture capital funding as a Black woman-owned small business in the US. Less than 3% of venture capital funds go to Black woman business owners in this nation. It’s a very significant reason that I have recently decided to take the supper club international.
Another challenge has been to receive interests for attending the supper parties from the Black community of Los Angeles, which has been a key desire for us in beginning the supper club in our hometown.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am blessed to share many of my talents and interests with the world and to receive praise for them all.
Along with being the co-founder and chef of NeverMeasure, I am the founder and owner of ‘Provisions by Cydney’, a YouTube channel and virtual space where I support individuals with astrological information for their personal natal chart, tarot and oracle readings and mediumship. I am also a songstress and have recorded one EP at the age of 16. I have recently decided to embrace my voice and share it more with others in live spaces like jazz clubs, full moon and new moon ceremonies in collaboration with sound healers and musicians.
I am truly proud to be me, simply put. I am proud of taking it day by day as I step out of my “comfort zones” in regard to all of my talents. I am proud of my evolving openness to trying new things no matter who is or isn’t watching. I love what I have created and what I am creating and this is the greatest reward to me, my joy and inner fulfillment.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Live your life from your heart center and train your mind to support that.
