Today we’d like to introduce you to Britney Campbell
Hi Britney, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Well the short version of my origin story is I moved to Sacramento, California when I was eight somehwhat abruptly. I was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica and truly loved my time there.
In my time in Sacramento I went to an arts middle school/ high school to hone my visual art skills. And that sort of set me on a path of centering my life around art in all forms.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s never smooth being an immigrant tbh. Especially since I am the first artist to come out my lineage. All of it has been a lot of trial and error.
I think if I was pursuing music that would have felt more in line with my culture. Such wonderful music has come out of my island. Jamaica has made such a big impact globally in terms of sound. But I pursued fashion and styling and that was so different than what was expected of me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am most proud of my versatility. I have had all sorts of creative endeavors over the years and I’ve learned so much. And I love learning. The act of doing is really my favorite way to learn as well, and so much good has come out of that.
My specialty is sustainable styling. I think people underestimate how special vintage garments can be and what they can add to your current style. Fashion as a practice is all about cycles and trends and so much is learned when you wear a little bit of history.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Well I think anyone who’s ever been on a hike with me knows, but I’m really afraid of lizards. Like I will cry immediately. Which is strange to most because I am from an island, but I think thats where it all started. They were in the house and were all shades and sizes and I think over the years just turned into a whole phobia. So I don’t hike in the summer for that reason.
