Conversations with Taren Mansfield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taren Mansfield.

Hi Taren, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison with degrees in Political Science and Gender & Women’s Studies. After graduation, I spent the following years in Madison working in business, sports marketing, and higher education. That is until I became an intern at Shondaland in 2019 on my favorite show, How to Get Away with Murder.

Fast forward three years later, and I am now in the development for my very own TV show! In my free time, I actively speak to high school and college students about my journey to hopefully inspire young people to lean into their boldness to ultimately make their dreams a reality.

Seeing is believing!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The most challenging part of my journey thus far has been continuing to be patient, brave, and tenacious after my most outrageous dreams. For all of those reading, that is my biggest advice to you, KEEP GOING.

As my sister loves to say, “If it’s meant, it’ll be.” Hang tight to that.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love writing character-driven dramedies that are filled with twists and turns. I also love writing young adult, sci-fi, coming of age, and romance. I enjoy telling stories about women and their relationships in the modern world. I also love sports, political thrillers, and writing about the realities of balancing challenges in the public and private spheres. My goal is to always entertain with a purpose and to share stories with impact while also taking the audience on a rollercoaster of a ride!

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was filled with curiosity and a huge imagination. I was encouraged to dream big and far. As a Black girl from the Twin Cities, I was fascinated by worlds that were uniquely their own. At times I was Raven Baxter from San Francisco, one of the Camdens in Glenoak, besties with Serena and Blair in Manhattan, or in class at Hillman in Virginia. I played house with my American Girl dolls and way too many hours of Sims. I collected Beanie Babies and loved baking in my Easy Bake Oven.

I had a childhood that promoted exploration and innovation in a place that valued tradition and groundedness. I’ve learned to value both tremendously.
