Hi Sauraj, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I come from a middle-class Indian family where both my parents dedicated their careers to the Government Sector. Despite not having a family background in business, I’ve always harbored a passion for both entrepreneurship and music. My journey into the world of business began during my undergraduate years, where I seamlessly merged my love for playing the guitar, a passion since grade 9, with my pursuit of an Engineering degree.

In the second year of my studies, a golden opportunity presented itself, and I joined a music company as a Sales and Operations Manager. This role became a pivotal learning ground, immersing me in the intricate dynamics of the musical instrument retail and eCommerce industry. Upon completing my undergraduate degree, fueled by an intense entrepreneurial spirit, I decided to establish my own business.

Leveraging my dual expertise as a musician and a Computer Engineer, I founded a music retail business in the bustling city of Mumbai, India. Simultaneously, I launched an eCommerce platform aimed at importing high-quality musical instruments from around the globe and distributing them across Asia. What started as a solo venture blossomed into a thriving enterprise, boasting three physical stores and a successful online presence. Collaborations with renowned vendors such as Yamaha Music, Casio, Gibson, and Ibanez further propelled the business to success.

This entrepreneurial journey served as a comprehensive learning experience, providing insights into sales, operations, finance, taxation, and human resources. As a touring musician, I faced the challenge of managing the business remotely, honing my skills in delegation, and finding the delicate balance between creative pursuits and entrepreneurial responsibilities.

In the realm of music, my journey since 2014 has been a captivating odyssey marked by collaborations with numerous artists in the Indian Music Industry. From traversing India to gracing international stages in North America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, the experiences have been as diverse as the melodies I’ve strummed.

A pivotal chapter unfolded when I became the Lead Guitar player for India’s biggest commercial singer, Neha Kakkar, in January 2018. This role has led me to be an integral part of her musical escapades, accompanying her on major tours and public appearances around the world.

My story highlights that one doesn’t necessarily need a familial background in art or business to attain musical and entrepreneurial success. If someone like me can carve a niche in this dynamic industry, then the doors of possibility are open for anyone willing to embrace the journey with dedication and resilience.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While my journey into entrepreneurship and music has been incredibly rewarding, it hasn’t been without its share of challenges. Establishing my own business in the music retail sector presented obstacles that required resilience and strategic navigation. One of the primary hurdles was the absence of a family background in business. Starting from scratch meant I had to learn the intricacies of running a business, from operations to finance, often through trial and error.

Balancing the demands of my dual roles as a musician and an entrepreneur posed another significant challenge. Being deeply involved in the music industry and undertaking extensive tours demanded effective time management and the ability to delegate responsibilities within the business. This duality forced me to master the art of remote business management, a skill that proved crucial in ensuring the sustained success of my venture.

Navigating the competitive and volatile music industry also brought its set of challenges. Securing collaborations, establishing a reputation, and maintaining consistency in a field driven by trends and rapid changes demanded not only musical talent but also strategic networking, dedication, and integrity.

Despite these challenges, each obstacle became a stepping stone, contributing to my personal and professional growth. The journey, though not always smooth, has been a continuous learning experience, reinforcing the belief that dedication and resilience are integral to overcoming obstacles in both entrepreneurship and the world of music.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my multifaceted career, I wear two distinct hats — as an entrepreneur in the music retail sector and as a lead guitarist deeply entrenched in the vibrant Indian music industry. My journey began during my undergraduate years, where I seamlessly merged my passion for playing the guitar with my pursuit of an Engineering degree. This intersection led me to a role as a Sales and Operations Manager in a music company, laying the groundwork for my venture into entrepreneurship.

As the founder of a music retail business in Mumbai, India, I’ve built a thriving enterprise with three physical stores and a robust online presence. Specializing in the import and distribution of high-quality musical instruments from global vendors like Yamaha Music, Casio, Gibson, and Ibanez, my business caters to the diverse needs of musicians across Asia. The experience has honed my skills in sales, operations, finance, taxation, and human resources, providing a comprehensive understanding of the intricate dynamics of the industry.

Simultaneously, my career as a lead guitarist has been marked by collaborations with numerous artists in the Indian music scene. Notably, I assumed the role of Lead Guitar player for Neha Kakkar, India’s biggest commercial singer, in January 2018. This position has led me to perform on major international stages, including North America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. I’ve contributed to the music arrangements for live television performances and graced the stages of prestigious award shows.

What I’m most proud of is the ability to navigate and succeed in two dynamic and competitive fields. My relentless work ethic, disciplined practice, and commitment to delivering exceptional results in both entrepreneurship and music have set me apart. The integration of my expertise as a musician and a Computer Engineer in establishing and managing a successful music retail business showcases a unique combination of skills that contributes to my distinctive professional identity.

The journey has not only shaped me as a versatile entrepreneur and musician but has also instilled in me a profound appreciation for the delicate balance between creative pursuits and entrepreneurial responsibilities. The ability to carve a niche in both worlds, despite the absence of a familial background in art or business, stands as a testament to the possibilities open to those willing to embrace their journey with dedication and resilience.
