Conversations with Robert Ramos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Ramos

Robert, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m originally from San Jose, California, and at 17, I defied my parents wishes and moved to Los Angeles to attend beauty school. I always knew I wanted to be part of Hollywood, working in magazines, TV, and movies. My big break came at 22 when I met Bette Midler, which led to an incredible career working with stars like Jessica Alba, Eva Mendes, Stevie Nicks, and Kelly Clarkson. My salon and my work have been featured in many publications. Now, with 34 years running my salon, Ramos Carreon Salon and the relaunch of my product line Robert Ramos Products, I’ve been nominated for several Emmys and won other awards. I’m still pushing boundaries, staying on top of trends, and making sure every client feels like a star!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey hasn’t always been a smooth road. When I first started, I didn’t know anyone in the industry and I didn’t know much about how things worked. I had to ask a lot of questions, figure things out as I went, and learn not to get discouraged when things didn’t work out or when I didn’t get a job. Another big challenge was opening the salon at just 25-I was still so young and had to navigate running a business while still growing in my own career.

One of the biggest setbacks was the pandemic. The salon barely survived. We had to deal with new regulations, not being able to work or earn money and the uncertainty of what would happen next. But one thing that really stood out to me during that time was how my team came together. I’ve always valued my team and my clients, but seeing everyone rally to make sure we stayed open was truly incredible. It was a tough time, but I know it made us stronger in the long run.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m fortunate to have created some truly iconic looks throughout my career. In the 1990s, I crafted Bette Midler’s signature look for that time. I also transformed Brittany Murphy from a brunette to a blonde and developed Jessica Alba’s signature caramel honey highlights. When Jessica attended her first Academy Awards with a Grace Kelly-inspired look, it was widely written about and considered one of the most iconic looks of the night.

I’ve also been known for working with brunettes, creating shades that look natural and rich without being too red or overly warm. At one point, I gave Rachel McAdams her pink streaks which was a fun and memorable moment.

What sets me apart is my versatility. I cut, color, and style hair, rather than focusing on just one area. I also know how to work across different industries, whether it’s a movie set, a TV show, or the cover of a magazine. Each requires a different skill set, and I love the variety. My experience in these different spaces has also influenced how I work in the salon, helping me understand and adapt to all types of clients.

What I’m most proud of isn’t just the work I’ve done but the impact I’ve had. I’ve built a lasting career, created a successful salon and product line, and stayed on the cutting edge of the industry. But most of all, I’m proud of mentoring young hairstylists and helping them succeed. Many of them have gone on to have incredible careers, and knowing I’ve played a role in their journey is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Getting in touch with me isn’t difficult, and I’m quick to respond. I’m always open to new ideas and collaborations, whether it’s something creative, business-driven, or community-focused.

One of the most rewarding collaborations I’ve done was working with my good friend Candice Lambert-McAndrews on a project “Be-You-Tiful Makeovers” where we provided full makeovers for women who wouldn’t or couldn’t normally afford them. We gave them the “gift of glam” hair, makeup, and wardrobe transformations. I love working on projects like that and continue to collaborate on initiatives that help people or businesses.

I’m always open to collaborate to promote the salon, my product line and or just me the hairstylist. Whether it’s featuring me in media, showcasing my products, or finding creative ways to spread the word, I’m always open to new opportunities. You can never have too much promotion, and I love working with people who are excited to share what I do.
