Today we’d like to introduce you to Nora Demarcky.
Hi Nora, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised In Oakland, California. I grew up buying clothes second-hand and of course, like most kids who haven’t had new clothes growing up, I couldn’t wait to buy the new shoes or clothes friends and schoolmates had. I quickly realized that I actually loved vintage and used clothes because they were more unique than what everyone else was wearing and priced right and made better. Once clothes were being mass-produced and fast fashion took over things have changed. We’ve all bought the cute garments you get to wear a couple of times before the shape /material or stitching starts acting up. I wanted to be able to create content faster and I have photography experience so I started doing my own shoots for my online store and for my Instagram. I always found that vintage stores had way overpriced items and I wanted to make vintage unique well made items accessible and affordable. I started out just doing shoots with friends and then was asked to do a fashion show and my love for styling models was found! Now I like to do shoots with photographers and just focus on the styling aspect. I started just selling pieces online in 2012 and then after doing my first fashion show, I realized how ignited I felt seeing the looks I had put together be brought to life by people and I have been doing fashion shows and photo shoots ever since!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’m not a professionally trained stylist and since I haven’t been to school for fashion in any capacity, it’s oftentimes harder for me to book the paying jobs or even be considered for some gigs. I’m truly in love with fashion and styling. I literally will lay in my bed putting together looks or thinking of shoot ideas. It’s really hard to realize you love to do something and feel so passionate about it and then have to do something else to pay the bills. I’ve found something that really makes me feel alive so I’m happy to wake up every day and strive to make my dreams into a reality.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a stylist from Oakland, California and the owner of Talk of the Town vintage. I curate vintage and some modern pieces to create bold timeless outfits. I’m a storyteller and I love to take people out of their comfort zone and have them wear something they wouldn’t normally gravitate to. I’m never gonna have a model do a shoot or walk a runway in something they don’t like or feel good in. It’s all about making someone take a look at themselves and feel good!
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Talk of the Town is a vintage curated affordable fashion line based out of Oakland that does styling, vending, fashion shows, photo shoots with a unique and timeless esthetic.
