Conversations with Nicole Turner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Turner.

Hi Nicole, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I got into the beauty industry after I moved across the country from VT to CA. Prior to the move, I had completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and had been working in child care for many years. When I moved, I decided it was time to switch career paths altogether, but I couldn’t quite find my calling. At the time I began selling makeup online through an MLM company as something to fill my time and earn some income. It was a perfect excuse to connect with other women and make new friends, as well as keep in touch with existing friends. I realized how fulfilling this was once people started asking me to do their makeup, so I decided to go to beauty school and eventually start my own business as a lash artist. I briefly worked for a corporate lash company upon graduating but quickly went out on my own. I started off by trading assistant services in exchange for a space to take clients in a cute studio and eventually went on to obtain my own studio space. I now have two renters and one employee, my own product line, and am offering training to other artists as well. I am also teaching the lash courses at the beauty school I graduated from about five years ago.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not always been a smooth road. Making the decision to go out on my own was very scary since I had just recently moved to a new area and had no network whatsoever. I was lucky to find an opportunity to trade my services instead of having to pay for a space while I was building my clientele, however it didn’t end up being the best of circumstances for the environment I was trying to create. Once I was fully out on my own, that came with a completely new set of challenges. I was suddenly in charge of marketing, social media management, scheduling, decision-making, and much more, all while servicing and managing clients. It’s hard to know if you’re making the right decisions when you’ve never been in the position of a business owner before. It’s a very emotional roller coaster, and just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, another curve ball is thrown your way. One of my biggest disappointments in my business to date was when I signed a lease for a new space and was so excited to upgrade! All payments were submitted and everything was all set to go, so I finally made the announcement on social media to let my clients know we would be moving on up! About an hour later I got a call from the landlord letting me know that the current tenant was refusing to vacate and that they would be canceling my lease. I didn’t even know that could happen. To say I was defeated and embarrassed was an understatement.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We specialize in lash extensions, but we also offer other serves, such as brow services, facials, organic spray tans, and waxing. We service a wide variety of clients from all walks of life. For me, I love the ability to enjoy different experiences every day. Even though most of my days are spent doing lashes, no two days are the same because each client brings a different energy and a different story to tell. I take great pride in really connecting with each and every client and making them feel completely beautiful and confident. Clients often comment on how they feel like they’ve known me forever or that they really love my energy and that really is a top-tier compliment. It is also a huge compliment when they continue to come back to me and refer their family and friends. Or when I can tell that they feel beautiful because I see they have the confidence to take selfies or they look at themselves in the mirror for an extra second. That really fulfills me and makes everything worth it! I think one thing that sets me apart besides my ability to connect with people and make them feel comfortable is my ability to offer any style or lash set that my client desires, from a natural daily look to super glam and dramatic. You have to be able to decipher the look that will compliment them the best based on what they are asking for as well as their lifestyle and facial structure.

What makes you happy?
Outside of work, what makes me the happiest is spending time with my loved ones, including our four dogs. I think I really thrive on strong connections, so I feel very fulfilled when my loved ones are close. We have a lot of fun together. I also enjoy good food with a nice view, vacations and weekend getaways, and making other people feel good.
