Conversations with Manuel Madrigal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Manuel Madrigal

Manuel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Bell Gardens, California, a tight-knit Latino-based community with a deep passion for football (soccer). Growing up, my life revolved around the game. Whether it was watching Mexican league matches with my dad on the weekends, playing with my local team, or leaving school early to catch Champions League games, football was always at the center of everything I did. It inspired me to be better, and even though I wasn’t always the best student, my dedication on the field earned me a 4-year scholarship to play collegiate soccer at Hope International University.

During my time at Hope, I had the opportunity to bond with teammates from all walks of life. We built a family despite our differences, which broadened my perspective. After college, I decided to step away from playing and focused on a career in manufacturing. I quickly progressed in the industry, managing operations and learning the business side of things. But even as my career grew, my love for football remained strong. I traveled the world, attending major games like the 2018 World Cup in Russia and Champions League matches in the UK and Spain.

It was during this time that I realized I wanted to contribute more to the sport I loved, especially in my hometown. Bell Gardens lacked a truly organized and competitive soccer club that could represent the talent and passion in our community. So, I decided to start my own youth soccer club to create those opportunities for local boys and girls.

Now, two years later, Bell Gardens Football Club has grown into something special, with three locations and over 300 active players. We’re on a mission to elevate youth soccer in our community, and the journey is only beginning.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Every meaningful change comes with its own set of challenges, and growing a club like Bell Gardens Football Club has been no different. Accommodating 300 members in just 18 months has been incredibly difficult. To achieve the vision I have for this club, we have to remain dynamic and open to change. That’s something not everyone is comfortable with, but it’s necessary for growth.

The road is long and far from smooth. Our end goal is still a distant one, but there are plenty of small wins along the way that keep us moving forward. Day by day, we make progress, and it’s those little victories that add up. I’m also incredibly grateful for everyone involved—parents, players, coaches, and staff. Their support and dedication have been the driving force behind our success so far. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today, and they’re what fuels our determination to keep pushing forward.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At Bell Gardens Football Club (BGFC), my focus is on developing young talent through a structured and competitive soccer environment. We specialize in providing high-level training for boys and girls, aged 2-18, ensuring they grow not just as athletes but as individuals. We’re known for pushing our players to step out of their comfort zones, which I believe is where real growth happens. This philosophy shapes everything we do, from our coaching methods to our emphasis on mastering the principles of play and decision-making on the field.

What I’m most proud of is the community we’ve built in such a short amount of time. We’ve gone from an idea to an academy with three sites and 300 active players in just two years. But it’s not just about numbers—it’s about the impact we’ve had on the players and their families. We’re creating opportunities for young athletes in a community that didn’t have much organized representation before. Seeing the growth in our players, both in skill and confidence, is something that I’m incredibly proud of.

What sets BGFC apart is our commitment to pushing the boundaries of youth development. We invest in coaching education, ensuring that our coaches are always learning and adapting. We also strive to create an environment that mirrors professional settings, giving our players a taste of what it takes to compete at the highest levels. Another unique aspect is how we engage with our players beyond soccer—building character, resilience, and a strong sense of community are just as important to us as winning games.

In the end, our goal is to be the best club in the country, but we’re not just chasing trophies—we’re building something that impacts lives on and off the field.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Here’s a response to the question about something surprising:

One thing that might surprise people who know me or are familiar with BGFC is that, after college, I actually stepped away from football and pursued a career in manufacturing management. I spent several years working in operations and growing into management roles in industries far removed from the football world. But through it all, my passion for the game never faded. In fact, it was my experience managing teams and operations in manufacturing that gave me the confidence and business acumen to take the leap and start BGFC.

Most people assume I’ve always been involved in football, but my background in business and management has played a huge role in how I approach building and running this club. It’s a unique blend of passion for the sport and strategic business thinking that has helped shape the success of BGFC.
