Conversations with Lori Young

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Young.

Hi Lori, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
A quick background on me, is that I always knew I wanted to be an artist, from a very early age. I started drawing and painting when I was five, and continued throughout high school and college, receiving an art scholarship to study illustration and graphic design at Western Washington University.

After college, while working as a freelance illustrator, I stumbled upon the chance to work behind a makeup counter at Nordstrom, and thought it would be a fun side job.

Soon after starting behind the counter, I quickly fell in love with the art of makeup, and I have continued on that path ever since.

I’ve worked for many different cosmetics companies over the years, and my career has evolved from sales and management, to focusing on freelance makeup and grooming for the t.v, red carpet, and advertising.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has definitely had its challenges. 11 years ago, I decided to move from Seattle to LA to pursue my dream of becoming a full-time industry artist. I moved here alone, not knowing anyone, and without a job. The first few years were a bit rocky, but as I expanded my network and continued to strengthen my portfolio, I began to book more jobs. My business has continued to grow each year.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My specialty in makeup is creating that perfect complexion for clients. Flawless skin, and natural makeup looks are probably my favorite looks to create.

When working on set, I do love the challenge of creating whatever look the job calls for, whether it be a dramatic smokey eye, or something more editorial and cutting edge.

However, the number one comment I hear from my clients, is how flawless and natural their skin looks, and how light and comfortable the makeup feels on their skin. This always makes me so happy to hear when working with clients.

In recent years I’ve also started to do more mens’ grooming, for red carpet and on set, which I really enjoy.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
One of the biggest reasons I love working as a makeup artist, is that everyday is different. Each job is an opportunity to be creative in a new way, meet new people, and learn something new. I also love connecting with my clients on a personal level and making them feel good! Makeup has a way of instantly boosting someones’ mood and confidence. All in all, making clients happy, in turn, makes me happy.
