Conversations with Loren Teetelli

Today we’d like to introduce you to Loren Teetelli.

Hi Loren, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Through my company Loren Nicole, I create gold handmade jewels inspired by the techniques, motifs, and lore of ancient cultures. Ancient technique and modern design combine in my wearable designs that have a sense of wonder, history, and beauty. The New York Times recently said, “For Loren Teetelli gold offers a portal to ancient civilizations—a perennial inspiration for her work, which she makes by hand in her Los Angeles studio.”

I found my talent for jewelry after working as an archaeologist and a conservator at the American Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, both in New York. To better understand the objects she was conserving, I turned to metalsmithing classes and found a passion for creating. While never undergoing formal training, I have sought out masters of specialized techniques not widely practiced today and has explored ancient metalsmithing on her own guided by an extensive library and appreciation for objects. I employ my knowledge of ancient civilizations, attention to minute details, and talent for making to create rare and beautiful jewelry pieces that will be treasured for centuries to come.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
For me, the process of building Loren Nicole has felt long, but in the big picture, I have seen success quickly. I don’t believe starting your own business is a smooth road for most. There are lots of ups and downs, moments of self-doubt, taking risks on opportunities, but you just keeping pushing forward, believe in what you are doing, and an audience will start growing that appreciates what you are contributing to society.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Loren Nicole is known for exceptional high-karat gold jewelry and objects. It is uncommon for companies at my level to have everything produced by the designer all in-house and to be crafted at such a high level. This is what set our collection apart from the rest. I love being a goldsmith and transforming precious materials into beautiful objects of art that tell stories of the past and my connection to it. I love learning from other masters and continually improving as a jeweler. Our collection is also rare in that it is heavily one-of-a-kind pieces, crafted in 22k yellow gold, using ancient techniques that are rarely practiced by other living jewelers. The collection bridges ancient and modern styles, which has allowed us to help clients both interested in antique and modern jewelry find their perfect jewel.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Nothing specific, but I love listening to audiobooks while I work. Almost always fiction.
