Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Cuenca.
Hi Kevin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in San Diego, one of 2 brothers, the son of a father (George) in the Navy and a mom (Judith) who earned a living as an occupational therapist. My brother and I (he’s older) played countless hours of sports growing up & I later took a liking to theatre/singing. We lived in 5 different cities growing up. All the moving helped me relate to people from different backgrounds. We moved to the North Bay Area of California when I was in 8th grade and I finished out my high school years there. I graduated from Syracuse University with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism and a minor in communications. After graduating, I spent nearly 15 years as a sports reporter/anchor on TV, finishing at the CBS affiliate in Los Angeles. Along the way, I won an Emmy for sports reporting and covered two NBA Finals, two World Series (Dodgers) & a Super Bowl (Rams). I also traveled to England, Australia, Germany and the Philippines to cover stories. I started taking social media seriously in 2018, creating a weekly car karaoke series for Instagram called #MusicMonday. Since then, I’ve built a following of 400K across all social media platforms. I’ve also worked with brands like 76, Hyundai, Dollar Shave Club, Lexani & Crep Protect for social media campaigns.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nope. Right after returning from covering the Super Bowl for KCAL9/CBS2, I was fired for what the station deemed was social media violations. They felt they owned my image and that, even though I was a freelance employee without a contract, health care or dental coverage, I couldn’t utilize social media to promote companies or make money through brand campaigns.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I like to think I’m known for making Mondays a little better for people and putting a smile on faces, helping them get through their day. I strive to connect with my supporters by making them feel seen and heard when they come onto my pages (especially Instagram, where I’ve built a following of 250K). My specialty is comedic videos, often shining light on my favorite rap & hip-hop songs from the 90’s ’til present day. I’m proud that I haven’t given up on my dreams & aspirations, while continuing to learn about a growing & ever-changing space.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Getting on a plane with my older brother Scott & flying to the Bay Area to spend a couple weeks with our grandparents (Nonnie & Abuelo) at their home in Sonoma. Whether it was catching frogs, playing war, shooting hoops, or just hanging out with our grandparents, those are some of the best memories of my life.
