Conversations with Journey Carter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Journey Carter

Journey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Different was birthed in 2012. I was about 11 or 12. It started with hair accessories. A beautiful flower with a swarovski crystal in the middle and a lace band. I wore them all the time as a kid. One day, I decided I wanted to be like my mom. So I created, The Journey Collection which is now, Different. As I started getting older I began studying the fashion industry. I appreciated being fly and chill. Streetwear was so inspiring. It could be anything, something as basic as a t-shirt but, the meaning is what made it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing is ever smooth. There’s ups and downs in life. I learned running a business is a lifestyle. I’m still learning. It’s constant evolution. Knowing that has kept me calm. Some struggles along the way were shipping/handling. Lol, that was the hardest. My business was still small when orders started coming in and it was hard to keep track. Maintaining a structure within the E-commerce world is so important. Having a strong foundation can take your business to the next level.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a designer. I learned how to design structures the best. Curating plans, building projects, and creating the meaning behind products. Designing clothes is fun but, curating what the people are going to see and how they interpret is so interesting. I studied sociology and architectural history in college and it expanded my thought process behind the why of creation. It gave me insight on how to research. It’s funny how the human eye interprets what it’s exposed to on so much of a deeper than we know.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Covid-19 crisis taught me how important spending time with your family is. The world is so fragile and life is so precious. Prior to Covid I don’t think that was innerstood.
