Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Getskow.
Hi Jamie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my career in the beauty industry as a receptionist. I was blessed with the best mentor. Lynn Noel. She was the owner of one of the nicest salons in Santa Clarita. She encouraged me to go to beauty school. My intention was to finish college to be a Kindergarten teacher. l figured I’d work as a manicurist at her salon while earning a Liberal Studies degree. Lynn helped and supported me to complete beauty college.
I started as a manicurist, blessed to work with Lynn in the beginning. I briefly co-owned a Salon & Spa with a friend. When that didn’t work out I found a manicuring desk I could lease at another salon. I was planning to reopen the salon my friend and I had after she let our original spot go. The deal on that space went sideways when I noticed a Hollywood video space transforming into multiple little office spaces.
That build out with multi unit office spaces became Sola Salons. I am so glad my franchise owner Charles Caro brought Sola Salons to my home town. I was lucky to procure a one lady nail studio and the rest is history.
Covid hit many industry in our state hard. Our state kept the beauty industry shut down for months. I was able to maintain some of the clientele I built over those years. As the beauty industry shifted the franchise owners needed help with the five locations they had in California. I had been with them since 2011. I proudly helped them with things around my location. In 2021 they offered me a job managing their five California properties which I proudly accepted.
Sola Salons offers the beauty professional the chance to go into business for themselves but not by themselves. Sola Salons sets the beauty professional up in their own studio. There are 740 Sola Salons across the nation with more to come. I am so proud to manage five of them.
I am still holding hands for a living part time, while managing the five salon locations in El Segundo, Santa Clarita (Saugus), Valencia, Ventura and Thousand Oaks, I love being a Sola Pro and helping other beauty professionals make their dreams of owning their own salon come true.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Covid was tough to navigate through. California was the very last state to allow their beauty professionals to go back to work. Many of our clients moved out of California at that time:
Many industries have suffered post covid. It’s nice to see some thriving and some slowing making a comeback.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in natural nail services, nail art and spa pedicures. My Sola salons studio suite allows me to create a personalized nail experience.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Lynn was my salon owner mentor. I was lucky to learn from my nail mentor Teri Manzo. Mirage Hair & Nail Studio was the place to be. We always had a waiting list for our stations:
There is something to learn from every person you come in contact with. Be it other professionals in your salon word or your clients. The beauty industry places people from all walks of life in our chairs. Building a clientele can be difficult. You’re providing a service. They can go anywhere. But what separates you from others? Create that service and experience. You have to hustle every single day until you build it up. I have been so blessed to hold some of the same hands for over two decades.
