Conversations with Flash Calligraphy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Flash Calligraphy.

Hi Flash, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a concert promoter in Tokyo and moved to Los Angeles to study music business.
I graduated from the program, but along the way I realized I had completely lost interest in the industry.

After graduating, I took a step back and spent time reflecting on myself.
One day, while walking in Santa Monica, I met a young man doing calligraphy on the street. I was intrigued, and that moment led me to join him in street performances.

I decided to pursue this path seriously, and through a lot of trial and error, it eventually became something I could support myself with.

Today, I run an online store, sell my work at booths, and use social media to share what I do.
My next goal is to start a calligraphy class, as I earned my master-level calligraphy certification this summer.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Thankfully, I realized I had artistic talent, and my skills improved very quickly.
On the business side, however, I faced many challenges.

Since I didn’t have any business experience, I had to learn everything from scratch — how to manage money, handle taxes, and run a business.

I was also constantly studying how to attract customers online and how to increase sales at events.

But now, it has become one of my favorite parts of what I do, and I truly enjoy it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have been a Japanese calligrapher since 2018.
My mission is to share the beauty of Japanese calligraphy through my work.
I mainly write people’s names in Japanese, as names are something everyone feels connected to. Through them, I share the Japanese language and culture with others.

The Japanese spirit values harmony with others, quiet beauty, and sincerity.
Japan is often seen as a culture where people communicate with respect, calmness, and a sense of beauty.

Today, when we look at social media, there is a great deal of sad news, and many people are influenced by information whose truth is unclear.

Through Japanese calligraphy, I hope to share the Japanese spirit and offer a sense of calm, meaning, and connection.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
First, know who you are, what you want, and where you want to go.
If you truly listen to your inner voice, the answers are already within you.

You can change your world, no matter how old you are or where you are.

Just listen to your inner voice.
