Conversations with Eran Thomson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eran Thomson.

Hi Eran, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I misbehaved as a kid, my parents sent me to my room to write stories.

As punishment.

I was bad a lot. But I got good at words.

This resulted in me skipping ahead several grades in school, winning writing competitions, and scoring scholarship money to attend Journalism School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill – out of state.

From there I began an award-winning career as an advertising copywriter, creative director, and now, comedy writer/director.

After nearly two decades of writing for products, brands, magazines, websites, TV, film, radio, and newspapers, it’s safe to say I’ve got more than 10,000 hours under my belt.

Favorite prizes won for my writing to date include a surfing wetsuit, an inflatable alien doll, and a $14,546 refund on a phone bill.

As for comedy chops, I’ve studied screenwriting at UCLA, sketching at The Groundlings, stand-up at NYU, improv at The Second City, structure with Steve Kaplan, and founded Australia’s #1 comedy school, Laugh Masters Academy.

I’ve been a screenwriter, a stand-up storyteller, a 2nd place winner at The Moth, and don’t mind getting laughed at by strangers.

And like most creative people, I have several side hustles:

I am the creator of the hit music and memory game “Song Saga.” (https://song-saga.com)

I write and host the three-minute podcast, One Word Suggestion. (https://onewordsuggestion.net)

I blog on my site: eranthomson.com

And routinely try to make sense of stuff my wife says at tishmywifesays.com

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am addicted to potential.

I see possibilities everywhere and can sometimes skip (mentally) to the finish line without placing the required focus on what needs to be done to actually get there.

This is the curse of being a multipotentialite.

And also a blessing.

Curiosity and creativity are the biggest drivers in my life and my work and this has given me broad experience and expertise that’s proven to be invaluable.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My current focus is writing and directing comedy as a commercial director.

You can see my work at https://writeranddirector.com – and if you click on the donkey’s face, you’ll see why you should very seriously consider working with me.

I’m also a freelance copywriter/creative director and you can see my work at https://eran.co

Besides writing ads and scripts, I am also writing a comedic memoir about all the times I’ve almost died.

It’s called “A Laugh Threatening Situation.”

If that made you laugh even a little, then consider signing up to see preview chapters on my website – https://eranthomson.com

And lastly, I’m working on a video content series based on the Song Saga game IP. If you work with/for a brand that might want to get on board as a sponsor, hit me up and I’ll share more.

What’s next?
My goals for 2023 are to publish “A Laugh Threatening Situation,” produce the Song Saga video series, shoot more funny ads, collaborate with nice people, and, like everyone else in Hollywood, find a Manager who thinks the sun shines out of my ass.

Pricing:

  • Song Saga – $24.99
