Conversations with Dj Hkeem

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dj Hkeem

Hi Dj, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I go by the name DJ Hkeem, and my journey has been anything but ordinary. Born and raised in Tajikistan, I grew up with a deep love for music but never imagined how far it would take me. In 2014, I took a leap of faith and moved to the United States to chase my dream of becoming a music producer.

I studied Music Production and Composition at Los Angeles City College, spending countless hours crafting beats and recording demos. But in 2019, something unexpected happened—I fell in love all over again. This time, with DJing. The energy, the crowd, and most of all, the infectious rhythms of Afro-Caribbean music pulled me in. I immersed myself in the culture, studying the sounds and perfecting my craft.

Fast forward to today, I’ve spun at clubs and festivals across the U.S. and Canada, sharing my passion with diverse audiences. As a producer, I’ve also released a few tracks, with more in the pipeline. And here’s an exclusive for you—this April, I’m dropping my next single with Nigeria’s rising star, Kobi Jonz. Stay tuned, because this one is special!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has definitely had its share of ups and downs. Living in Los Angeles—one of the most expensive cities in the world—is already a challenge. But making a living from music? That’s a whole different level.

In a city where almost everyone is a creative—whether it’s artists, producers, actors, or DJs—the competition is fierce. It’s like being one fish in a vast ocean full of other hungry, talented fish. But competition pushes you to grow, and I’ve learned to embrace it.

One of the biggest challenges was immersing myself in a new culture and sound. But surprisingly, it felt natural. The rhythms I encountered in Afro-Caribbean music had similarities to the music from my own culture, which made the journey exciting rather than overwhelming. The community in Los Angeles, especially within the Afro-Caribbean and African music scene, welcomed me with open arms. When they saw that I wasn’t just another DJ, but someone from a small country like Tajikistan who deeply understood the music, culture, and dance, they welcomed me with open arms.

That kind of recognition and appreciation—from both the community and people across the country—made every struggle along the way worth it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a DJ and music producer specializing in Afro-fusion and global dance music. My passion lies in blending sounds from different cultures, creating a unique vibe that resonates with people worldwide.

I stay active both behind the decks and in the studio—DJing at clubs and events like TikTok’s Black History Month celebration and White Claw Sessions by Billboard, as well as working with various artists to produce and release new music for the world to enjoy.

What sets me apart is my ability to bridge cultures through music. Coming from Tajikistan and immersing myself in Afro-Caribbean sounds, I bring a fresh perspective that fuses different musical influences in a way that feels both authentic and innovative.

One of the things I’m most proud of is seeing my music and DJ sets connect with people on a deep level—whether it’s making someone dance, introducing them to a new sound, or simply creating a moment they’ll remember. At the end of the day, that’s what drives me.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Absolutely! The COVID-19 crisis was a wake-up call in many ways.

First and foremost, hygiene and health should never be taken for granted. If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that simple habits like washing hands and taking care of ourselves can make a huge difference.

Secondly, it really put relationships into perspective. Friends and family are everything, and sometimes we don’t realize how much they mean to us until we’re faced with the possibility of losing them. The lesson here is to appreciate them before life forces us to.

And lastly—social media is more powerful than ever. During lockdowns, it became the main way people stayed connected, built careers, and even discovered new opportunities. It’s clear that social media isn’t just a trend; it’s a major part of our lives now, and knowing how to use it effectively is more important than ever.
