Conversations with Amber Harris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Harris.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Mahogany Dreams was born from my desire to celebrate self-care as a daily ritual, not just a luxury. I started by blending nourishing body oils in my kitchen, sharing them with friends and family, who fell in love with the scents and the way they made them feel. What began as a personal project grew into a business focused on quality, community, and honoring culture through fragrance and ritual.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road — but I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. Like many small business owners, I’ve faced my share of challenges, from balancing startup costs with my vision for a high-quality product to navigating supply chain hiccups and learning how to market my brand in a crowded industry.

There were times when I doubted myself or worried that I had taken on too much, especially as a woman of color building a luxury-inspired business from the ground up. Imposter syndrome is real, and I had to remind myself often that I deserved a seat at the table.

Another big challenge was educating customers about body oils and layering rituals — many people weren’t familiar with how to use these products or what made them special. That pushed me to get creative with storytelling, sampling, and community engagement.

Every obstacle, though, has shaped Mahogany Dreams into something more thoughtful and resilient. It’s taught me to stay adaptable, listen to my customers, and keep my mission — celebrating self-care and heritage — at the heart of everything I do.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Mahogany Dreams is my love letter to self-care. I create luxurious, skin-nourishing body oils inspired by rich, layered fragrances that invite people to slow down and savor their rituals. Each blend is crafted with high-quality ingredients and a focus on both sensory experience and skin health.

Beyond developing the products, I’m passionate about educating customers on how to build their own body care rituals — from layering scents to caring for their skin daily. It’s about more than looking good; it’s about feeling grounded, confident, and celebrated.

What makes Mahogany Dreams truly stand apart is the intention behind it. As a 911 operator and a mother, I know firsthand how chaotic and demanding life can be. I wanted to create products that remind people, especially those who pour so much of themselves into caring for others, to care for themselves too. That purpose shows up in every detail, from our scents to our messaging.

I’m most proud of how the brand has grown into a supportive community, encouraging people to pause, breathe, and reconnect with themselves. That’s what fuels me every day — knowing that Mahogany Dreams is helping others carve out moments of joy and self-love, no matter how busy or overwhelming life can get.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that surprises people is that I’m actually quite introverted. Because I run a brand and work as a 911 operator, people assume I’m naturally outgoing, but I truly value quiet moments and deep connections. That introverted side helps me listen, reflect, and pour intention into Mahogany Dreams — which is really about honoring those peaceful, personal rituals of self-care.
