Community Highlights: Meet Tyra Gardner of The Wellness Center of Mindfulness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyra Gardner.

Tyra Gardner

Hi Tyra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I became a Psychotherapist in 1994; my actual goal was to become an attorney. My first job when I graduated from Morris Brown College in Atlanta was as a Mental Health Therapist for the geriatric population in a hospital in Philadelphia, PA. I enjoyed meeting with people and providing a much-needed service to help people overcome life challenges. Like many professions, there was a lot of turnover, and I was laid off. During this time, I decided to explore other career opportunities however, all roads led me back to psychology and being a Psychotherapist who specializes in Anger Management, Business Therapy, and Lifestyle Coaching.

I have two podcasts. Tyra’s Just Saying is a podcast for business owners to share their entrepreneurial journeys. A Mental Health Minute with Drs. Candace and Tyra which is a mental health podcast where we discuss trending mental health topics to educate and inspire.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has not been smooth; there has been some obstacles such as being told NO when trying to level up in entrepreneurship or obtaining new partnerships or clients. The word NO in my opinion, represents the next opportunity, and using this as fuel to not allow me to stop achieving my desired goals.

As a child, I was told by teachers to focus on trade schools not to think about attending any college because I was what they deemed as “average” student. I used what I felt as negative energy by my former educators as my fuel to help me to get where I am today. I have a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a Master’s Degree in Education, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, and Organizational Development and Change. I’m completing my PhD in ODC in August 2023 from Fielding Graduate University.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Wellness Center of Mindfulness?
The Wellness Center of Mindfulness is a Boutique Therapy and Coaching practice that provides therapeutic support to individuals experiencing many of life’s challenges, including anxiety, anger, depression, grief, relationship issues, and trauma. The Wellness Center of Mindfulness also offers business therapy to help business owners and entrepreneurs who desire to better the effectiveness of their business as well as their business life.

The Wellness Center of Mindfulness implements effective psychotherapy methods to instill self-understanding among patients and encourage them to adopt new attitudes and feelings toward life situations. It is essential to keep in mind that therapy is not a magic pill or a quick fix: therapy is a healing process that necessitates participation and investment from the patient and caretaker alike. But in the end, making small changes to self-defeating behavior and coping with feelings of sadness, fear, and pain can bring life-altering results.

Our signature program is called My Outlet, which is a personal ventilation program that I’ve created to foster positive mental health among entrepreneurs around the country.

The Wellness Center of Mindfulness mission is to assist individuals to adapt to change and establish a work-life balance while coping with life’s challenges.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I always called myself a chameleon because I could and still can adapt to any situation and got along well with others. I loved to laugh and enjoy time with my family. My interest as a child was being able to work or start a business. I always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I was also interested in attending concerts, movies, and amusement parks and shopping with friends.
