Community Highlights: Meet Sean Clinton of Serene Touch Body Works

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Clinton.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a kid, my mom would have me to get up late at night Or early in the morning to massage your hands and feet. Growing up doing this, my mother told me that I should become a massage therapist, at the time I didn’t know what that was. As I became a senior in high school, I was asked to map out my career plan so I wanted to become a massage therapist. I did an intern at Long Beach Memorial Hospital and was racially profiled, encouraged by staff not to become one because it would be hard for me to gain the trust of the people due to me being African-American. After hearing that, I became discouraged so I didn’t go to school for years, then my mother encouraged me to go to school. Went to Bryman college for massage therapy. Graduated in 2005, my first job is working at a spa in Hollywood California stayed for 11 years and then I worked at a chiropractic office in the city of Long Beach, California for over 15 years. Developed and mastered my skills as a massage therapist. And now I have my own business called serene touch Bodyworks. I am currently endorsed by the mayor in Long Beach, CA as the absolute best Massage Therapist for the city. At the moment, I am in school to become esthetician Incorporating massage and skincare together. I travel and I have a remote area where I do my service.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, being told not to become a massage therapist from other fellow professionals due to me being African-American. Also over the years, my mother’s health was declining having to deal with that.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Been a massage therapist for over 17 years, I have mastered the technique but it’s still learning new ways to become better. I teach spouse massage, teaching Couples how to massage each other. I customizing massages to what the body needs. I’ve helped other students to pass their exams for massage therapy. I travel with clients and teach seminars for health and wellness.
