Community Highlights: Meet Ruben Martinez of RJM LAWYER

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruben Martinez.

Hi Ruben, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Early in my childhood I knew that I wanted to be an attorney, but getting here could have been easier. I spent most of my youth making bad decisions and prioritizing things and idolizing people that in hindsight I wish I would have had the good sense to denounce. But what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right? Through sheer luck I was able make it out of these dark ages relatively unscathed; I use the word “relatively” loosely. Eventually, I did get my head on straight, and without a doubt owe this PIVOT to my loving wife and two beautiful daughters, because if not for them I would still be lost.

I started RJM Lawyer over 5 years ago, and with unwavering dedication, pivotal relationships, and good old fashion GRIT, I achieved what I set out to do; create a successful law practice. The best part is, I’m not done! No longer a pipe dream I’m bringing RJM Lawyer to the lovely people of Ohio, and will be splitting my time between the Golden State and the Buckeye State. I can’t wait for this next chapter!!!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing worth having is ever easy! This rings true for me tenfold, starting with my youth. It wasn’t that I was exposed to an extraordinary amount of negativity; its that I looked for it, smoked it out, and eventually, found it. But the heartache didn’t end there; it followed me into adulthood. From the surface, it looked like I was doing everything right (Bachelors Degree, Law Degree, Decent Job). The problem was, I couldn’t see past tomorrow. Why? I was too consumed with my own needs and indulgences and fancies and no one else, just me. There’s also the fact that around this time I had failed the bar exam, not one, not two, but 5 times. I don’t need to tell you how deflating this was and how small I felt each and every time I received this awful news that I had failed once again. But that’s life and you can either let it knock you out or you can pull yourself back up. I chose the latter. On my 6th try, I finally passed the CA Bar Exam.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I started RJM Lawyer 5+ years ago and have never looked back. Admittedly, things were slow for the first couple of years, starting a law practice during COVID certainly did not help. But there is opportunity everywhere, and I was lucky enough to find it. Right out of the gate I made key relationships with other professionals who trusted me, and would refer me. I’m forever grateful to these people because without them I may have thrown in the towel and looked for a job with an established firm. Not that there’s anything wrong with this, but I prefer to be my own boss.

Then there was 2021, the year my family and I spent traveling the country in our RV. This trip was nothing short of amazing and something my family and I will always remember, but it did have its challenges. By no stretch was it easy to working remotely for over a year when you’re only in one given place for no more than a week or two. Oh, and sometimes I would have to drive 45 minutes to a coffee shop just so I could connect to the internet and answer emails.

In RJM Lawyer’s early days, there’s no doubt that I did a little bit of everything practice wise; not because I wanted to, but because I had to make a living and support my family. Today, I am happy to announce I am settled in 3-Areas of law with two notable mentions. This includes: estate planning, real estate, and asset protection. Notable mentions are incorporation and bankruptcy. Occasionally I will expand these perimeters, but usually and only as a favor to longtime clients.

How do you think about luck?
I don’t want to minimize the impact that professional relationships I’ve been fortunate enough to have, have had on my career. But when push comes to shove I make my own luck, and I do this through an unapologetic effort to always be better.
