Community Highlights: Meet Mary Chavarria of Mary Chavarria, MD – Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Chavarria.

Hi Mary, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Tarzana as the daughter of a pediatrician and child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist. I went to school at Mirman from Room 1 to Room 5 (was diagnosed with ADHD in Room 2, and greatly benefitted from Lindamood Bell for reading), then went to the Archer School for Girls 6th-12th grade, completed my Bachelor of Science degree at Duke University, and obtained my medical (MD) degree at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. I completed my adult general psychiatry residency at the UCLA/VA program in Westwood and completed my child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at USC (at LA General/LAC+USC and CHLA). I then started my child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry private practice (seeing individuals ranging from 5yo to 50s). I have joined the office of Dr. Mary Moebius who, in addition to being my wonderful mother, is also my private practice child/adolescent/adult psychiatry mentor.

In my free time I enjoy going on hikes with my husband and our adorable 4 year-old chihuahua-mix rescue dog Cindy, tending my growing orchid collection (8 of my 15 are currently re-blooming), traveling, trying new restaurants, and spending time with friends and family.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Medical training is a long, challenging journey, but one I found so rewarding and I am so happy I get to do this important, meaningful work helping people through some of their most difficult and painful times. Maintaining a good work-life balance is a struggle many people face and I have realized how important it is prioritizing this so I am able to be the human and clinician I want to be.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mary Chavarria, MD – Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatry?
I am a double board certified Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatrist. I started my private practice in the summer of 2024 following my adult psychiatry residency at the UCLA/VA program in Westwood and my child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at USC (at LA General/LAC+USC and CHLA). My primary interests are medication management of ADHD, anxiety, autism-spectrum comorbidities, depression, neuro- and gender-diversity, OCD, other mood disorders (DMDD, bipolar, etc), and trauma/PTSD. I work closely with psychotherapists, neuropsychologists, speech/language therapists, and other members of the care team for a comprehensive, collaborative approach to a patient’s treatment. I am out of network and we provide superbills. I offer visits both via tele-health and in-person at my Tarzana office.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My greatest two mentors in running my practice are Dr. Mary Moebius and my wonderful office manager, Kim Farhat who has over 30 years of experience ensuring the office runs smoothly and efficiently through her work with Dr. Moebius. I could not do it all without the love and support of my friends and family, including my husband who is also a psychiatrist, and our rescue dog Cindy.
